Rockit Gaming – The Neighbor
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
Vinny: Eclectic! When writing about so many different subjects it’s hard to nail down a singular sound. We have dark songs happy songs, hip-hop songs rock songs, pop songs, all under the genre “Nerdcore” and our fans get most excited when we come out with a new song because they don’t know what style they are going to hear next!
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
Vinny: We listen to a lot of pop and rock music with awesome production! Rockit loves anything from Blink 182 (which he has some tattoos of on his body) to Twenty One Pilots and I’m influenced by anything from old Elliott Smith songs to Charlie Puth or even BTS!
Q) What made you decide to focus on gaming themed music?
Vinny: Rockit began writing songs about Nazi Zombies back in 2008 and realized it was something he loved, and it could be lucrative. Flash forward seven years and he decided to start writing music not only dedicated to one video game, but all the most trending video games and he invited me because of my awesome songwriting skills and love for gaming! Together we’ve produced over two hundred songs in just over two years!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) The music comes first the majority of the time for sure, but even before then comes the vibe of a game. Since the songs are about games, to develop a song about a game you have to have a good sense of what that world is like and we believe we are some of the best people out there at understanding those worlds and how they translate to nerdcore/pop/rock music!
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) All of our music is produced mixed and mastered in house! We are a hell of a team, and we’re able to pump out tons of different styles of music! We live for creativity!
Q) What can fans expect from a live Rockit Gaming performance?
Vinny: Our performances are normally extremely flashy and fun! We model them after pop performances from some of the biggest acts to make sure the experience for the fans is one to remember every single time! Having said that we don’t perform all the time, considering we write, record and produce one to two songs every single week. Every Rockit Gaming song is available on our YouTube channel as well as places like Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play!
Q) What songs off your The Neighbor album do you most enjoy performing live?
Vinny: Our favorite one we used to play live every Wednesday at our weekly streamed couch party is definitely “Alone with You.” it has a new wave Jimmy Eat World vibe to it, which translates awesome to guitar and vocals!
Q) Difficult 2-part question: Favorite video game of all time and which current game has the best music to it?
Vinny: My favorite video game of all time is definitely Kingdom Hearts 2 so I was stoked when KH3 got announced at E3 this year! Rockit’s favorite of all time is Halo 3. Currently, Rockit is hooked on Fortnite and I mean HOOKED! [laughs] Personally, I play a lot of Overwatch and I follow the pro league that’s now on ESPN! Can’t wait for the Overwatch League Finals!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Last year we were invited to play the Live at Heart Music Festival in Sweden! It was the coolest experience ever.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) It would be super dope to collaborate with a rapper or singer that digs video games, too! I know the guys in Imagine Dragons are pretty into gaming and, of course, we saw Post Malone freak out about Fallout 76 on Twitter awhile back. Either of them would be super fun to collab with!
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
Vinny: We were listening to that artist Juice World a lot before the last couple Twenty One Pilots songs came out. Now, that’s kind of taken over. But overall this new wave emo kid melodic rap music is really catchy and cool. Rockit and I both agree that melodies are king and some of those melodies are pure fire, from people like Post Malone and Juice World.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
Vinny: We wouldn’t be able to do what we love if it weren’t for our fans. That’s a fact. Considering how much content we release I’d argue we have a better connection with our fans that most artists in the music industry today! It’s super important because we keep them engaged by releasing brand new Rockit Gaming songs EVERY single Friday. Plus, we like to show them that we are people too, by streaming us producing mixing or recording live music, or just playing video games!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
Vinny: We seriously love all of you. Over the years you’ve become like family to us and growing that family is the coolest thing ever. Thank you so much for being a fan and of course, don’t forget to comment and smash that like button on all our videos for New Music Fridays! #GameOn
