Q) How would you describe your sound?

Sam:  I don’t know. I guess loud, but not loud to the point where you lose the songs you know.

Adam: Loud, cliché and loud

Danny:  Loud, in your face, ballsy

Q) I hear a mix of Green Day and The Clash in your songs, are these bands part of the influence on your music?

Sam: Not really, but they’re both great so I’ll take that.

Adam: Very possibly, maybe subconsciously.

Danny:  From a young age I was always an avid green day fan and various members of my family were big into punk. So, defo those bands have had some influence on me.

Q) What inspired you to make music? Was it always the dream or was there something else you wanted to do growing up?

Sam: I was never going to be a train driver so this was the next best thing, I guess. Plus, I came from a relatively musical family so it was inevitable.

Adam: It’s the only thing I’ve ever been slightly better than average at and I’m not smart enough to be an astronaut.

Danny: To be honest, I can’t think of one particular thing that has inspired me to make music, but over the years it has just evolved into a passion. But the idea of always making it big is probably at the back of everyone’s mind at some point.

Q) So, how did you all meet and get together as a band?

Sam: Me and Danny knew each other from bands we’d been in before and doing gigs with our respective old bands etc and then Adam I knew just as this wee lad from up the road in Carrick who played the drums.

Adam: Literally got a message on Facebook asking me if I wanted to join.

Danny: I knew Sam from a previous band i was in and i met Adam outside an undertones gig which Sam was at

Q) What advice would you give to bands that are just starting out?

Sam: Never underestimate the value of spare guitar strings.

Adam: Believe in the power of prayer

Danny: Keep pushing and always continue to try and improve, if you think something is good try to make it better. You will have bad gigs, suck it up and learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Personally, I feel making music is a continuous learning experience.

Q) So, “Rule The World Tonight” is a proper headbanger! Is there a particular message you wanted to get across with this song?

Sam: Guess it means have a good time, but don’t take shit from anyone in the process.

Adam: Life, the Universe and lots of Turtles

Danny: Rule the world tonight. That is all.

Q) What is your writing process? Do the lyrics come first or do you have a particular sound in your head whilst writing them?

Sam: I don’t trust people who write lyrics first. I think you’ll find people who write lyrics first are actually crab people who have been sent to destabilise society and make everyone miserable. The Smiths, The 1975 and Modern Baseball are all crab people. I guess the tunes are a bit like chundering, after a feed of pints you can feel it coming and it kinda just slips out.

Adam: Sam does lyrics last I think.

Danny: The main songwriting comes down to Sam, but once we all get together and jam the songs generally just gel together themselves and we all add our own wee ideas.

Q) Do you guys have a particular favourite song of yours?

Sam: I feel, as a band, we enjoy playing a thus far unreleased song called “Atomic Heart” because it’s a good loud one from start to finish. But, personally, I enjoy another unreleased song called “When The Sun Goes Blind” because it’s a very pretty song but also has balls where it counts.

Adam: One that hasn’t even been played live yet.

Danny: My favourite is “Pretty Little Animals” and it’s mainly down to the fact it was the first song we all recorded together.

Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?

Sam: We’re gonna be doing an album, but I don’t know if we’re allowed to say that yet…Oh heck, I just did. [grin]

Adam: An album, hopefully.

Danny: If I tell you, I will have to kill you. [cough] Yes.

Q) What’s the been a particular highlight of being in Saint Sapphire so far?

Sam: Making it as far as we have. Been a good laugh making it further than we thought we would.

Adam: Being the first band to be recorded by the BBC with tape in 40 odd years when we recorded some archive footage with them recently in Belfast.

Danny: Getting turfed out of the Rocksteady Club in London for being too loud. The poor club owner was running around with a sound meter trying to make sure we didn’t break any local authority sound regulations…which we did…We smashed them wide apart. [grin]

Q) What does the future hold for Saint Sapphire?

Sam: Hopefully making it even further than we anticipate now.

Adam: Pints….leading to more Turtles..Turtles are important. I’d like to take this opportunity to give my two friendly Turtles, Yurtle and Freya, a huge shout out!

Danny: More tunes, more gigs, loads of pints

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?

Sam:  I love you. You’re class and bill us for the damage to your ears and brain.

Adam: Thank you.

Danny: You’re really sound and we appreciate you putting up listening to us.
