Interviews
Samskara Rad – Purple Lovers
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Hyper pop-rap-hip-hop, experimental at times on the edge. It’s new and fresh and how I express myself as my current muse dictates. I’ve been creating and writing music and songs for most of my life, and I keep evolving. This is my current state of mind and musical direction. My sound is both edgy and warm.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I enjoy and relate to musicians who make a difference. Drake, Cochise, Doja Kat, Travis Scott and Post Malone but I may also listen to anyone from Harry Styles, Justin Bieber and to some obscure unknown artist who are in their primary raw stages of their career.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Purple Lovers.”
A) “Purple Lovers” came to me as I was reflecting on how I felt as a teenager falling in love. And I tried to express it in the lyrics as everything that is dreamy, joyful and surprising such as the insecurities, the crushes, first kisses, heart fluttering racing, touching, etc. Purple Love seemed to be the best emoji to express it, so I gave it that name.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The dreamy like melodies and story line and the driving beat. It was also the first song I used a lot of falsetto, which can lift the song.
Q) I love the lyric video animation! Where did the concept for it come from?
A) Thank you. Together it was an inspiration with my creative artist from Kiev in the Ukraine who goes by the name “Happy” (@itssshappy) whom I collaborate a lot with in my projects and I love the way it turned out, almost cartoon-like.
Q) What is your song writing process?
A) My song writing process is multi-faceted. Sometimes I get it on the guitar. Sometimes on the keyboard, sometimes the beat. That can happen at 2am in the morning or anytime of the day.
When I’m sold on it, it sticks to me, and I take it to the studio and start layering it down with my engineer here in Australia. Then, I send it to the producers to do their magic.
Q) Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It is easier to have the music because the music speaks its part and brings all the lyrics out together. But sometimes I hear the beat in my head, and I hear the chant, and from that evolves another layer.
Q) Kevin Anyaeji and Keyz Kartel lent you a hand with production on “Purple Lovers.”
A) Yes, as mentioned I’ve been collaborating with Kevin for a long time. They’re my main guys. They are based in LA and Keyz Kartel in the UK. They have their finger on what’s new in today’s beats and production.
They create great sounds and I love their mixes. For my EDM mixes I use producer Austin Leeds from Miami, who had many collaborations with Avici.
I also get a great vibe from my local engineer Pilsy (Pilsonic) here in Australia near Byron Bay; he has a great ear.
Q) How much of hand do you typically have in the production of your music?
A) The final production I leave to the professionals. I do all the tracks here with my mate Pilsy and then send them off to LA.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) The singles are helping me to reach out to my audience but will be working on an EP in the near future.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I have performed in many venues here in Australia early in my career together with some of the biggest names in the Australian music industry.
I’m planning now to put a show together so I can bring my new music to the live stage.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Someone exciting fresh and new like The Kid Laroi
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I listen to Spotify and all platforms like everybody else who’s excited about new music. I like listening to artists like Cochise, and others too many to list here.
I dig it when an artist takes you to that place where you empty yourself and become something else.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s about having connection first and, in the end, you need it to get your music out there.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thanks for being a fan, you mean a lot to me, as you enrich my existence.
Thanks Starry for the interview and be always happy to listen to great music.
