Sarah Drew – Stolen By Their Father
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for the film Stolen By Their Father.
A) Stolen By Their Father is about a mother, Lizbeth Meredith who says goodbye to her young daughters. They have left for a non-custodial visit with their father, her abusive ex-husband. However, only a few days later, Lizbeth discovers he has kidnapped the children and taken them to Greece.
For the next two years, Lizbeth travels to the White House and Greece, burning through every dime and favor to get her children back. This urgency to find her daughters is fueled by the memories of her own childhood kidnapping. One false move and her ex-husband will vanish with her girls. This would guarantee that Lizbeth will never see them again. Two false moves and he’ll make good on his promise to kill her.
Yet, a mother’s love knows no borders, and Lizbeth will risk everything to protect her daughters and bring them back home.
Q) Is it more difficult for you as an actress to embody a real person rather than a fictional character?
A) I treat every character I play the same whether they are fictional or real. I try to embody what is written on the pages of the script.
Q) Talk about working with Carina and Valentina to develop the familial bond needed to fight for them as a mother.
A) It was a joy working with them. They are sisters in real life, so they had a very real bond walking into the shoot. It’s not difficult of me to imagine the distress that Lizbeth experiences in the story because I am a mom, and the greatest fear of my life is that something will happen to my children or that I will be separated from them.
Q) The movie was shot partially in Greece. What were some of your favorite parts from filming there?
A) I was able to bring my family with me and we had such an incredible time exploring. It was a once in a lifetime experience for all of us. We loved getting to explore and I also really enjoyed the Greek cast and crew. The actors were phenomenal, and the crew was AMAZING.
Q) There were a number of heart wrenching scenes to watch in the movie. Which scene(s) challenged you the most whether emotionally or as an actress?
A) There’s a scene when I finally find my daughters, but they don’t want to touch me or go with me because their father has turned them against me. That was absolutely heartbreaking to play emotionally. Just imagining what it would feel like to have searched and searched for my kids for years only to have them turn away from me is unfathomably devastating. It wasn’t hard to access my distress in that scene, but it was exhausting to live it out on screen.
Q) What do you think it is about Stolen By Their Father that will make it a fast fan favorite Lifetime movie?
A) I think ultimately this film is a thriller, but it is a thriller that is motivated and driven by love – a mother’s love, a child’s love, the love of community and friends who rise up to help this family in distress. I think the film takes you on an emotional journey that is profound and ultimately cathartic and deeply satisfying. I think people will really respond because they will be swept up in this emotional journey.
Q) What are the other recent projects that you have been busy working on?
A) I’m currently in prep for my film Reindeer Games, which is an original script that I wrote and am producing and starring in for Lifetime. I’m really looking forward to pulling my cast together and digging in. This project has been many years in the making and it’s my baby, so I’m thrilled to see it come to life! I’m also in post-production on my new series “Amber Brown,” which will drop on Apple TV+ this spring or summer. I’m staying busy and loving every second of it.
Q) Are there any upcoming plans to write more movies or series scripts?
A) I definitely hope to write more scripts in the future. Reindeer Games has been an absolute joy to write, and I look forward to finding more opportunities to grow as a writer.
Q) I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the wonderful time we had watching you on “Grey’s Anatomy.” What did you personally take away from your time working on this series?
A) “Grey’s Anatomy changed my life in so many ways. I was able to tell stories I really cared about which affected so many people, I was able to have both of my kiddos in a community that really supported new mamas, and I was able to grow a global fan base which transformed my career. I’m eternally grateful for all of the ways the show effected my life.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the wonderful work you do on our screens?
A) My fans are so amazing and so passionate. They are loyal and die hard and every time I get to meet one in real life it makes me so happy. I’ve been honored to have them follow me from “Grey’s Anatomy” to all of my other projects and I always look forward to any and all opportunities to interact with them.
