Sarah Klang – Beautiful Woman
By: Mariah Thomas
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Sad girl twirk
Q) Who are some musical inspirations you’ve had throughout your life?
A) Sharon Van Etten, War on Drugs, Kevin Morby
Q) Your latest album Beautiful Woman beautifully covers child to teen years and the experience of being a young adult. How did this album concept come to be?
A) I just keep writing about my life and where I’m at. Every three years seems to have some sort of big change that I want to capture in my lyrics.
Q) The album cover for Beautiful Woman seems to perfectly capture the experience of being a woman. Tears with a smile on your face. How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
A) Me and Fredrika Eriksson (photographer) wanted to make some sort of “movie poster” vibe. Lars von triers -nymphomaniac, a scary movie or the vibe of just a sad looking strip club.
Q) Your music is very storytelling based. What is your typical songwriting process like?
A) Nowadays, I just try to write every day before picking my kid up from school. I think you have to look at it in a little boring way, just keep writing even if there’s not really much good coming out. In the end there will be bits and pieces you really love.
Q) Out of your discography, what song do you feel most proud of writing?
A) “Anywhere,” “Belly Shots” and probably “Beautiful Woman.” But “Bridge” has one of my best lyrics.
Q) This album has one feature – Fruit Bats’ song “Last Forever.” What was that collaboration experience like?
A) Epic. Imagine getting to sing with your biggest idol. That’s what it was like.
Q) Of these new songs, which have you enjoyed performing live the most?
A) I love “Go To The Sun.” It’s such a sunny bop, but when people sing along to “Beautiful Woman,” I die.
Q) Who are some artists you would like to collaborate with?
A) Becca Mancari, f’n love her
Q) What did it mean for you to be part of SXSW this year?
A) Hard to say really. I mean, it’s like a normal show, just more stressful. [laughs] I’m just happy people came and enjoyed the show. I like Austin and there’s a lot of great musicians there.
Q) How did you approach putting together a setlist for SXSW?
A) Man, it was a bit tricky ‘cus we brought in Max on drums and we’d never met before the show, so we’d kind of just winged it.
Q) Who were some artists that you were looking forward to seeing or meeting while at the festival?
A) I’m the worst when it comes to seeing shows. All I want to do is to drink beer and talk to friends. Two or three songs are enough for me, then I get restless. [laughs] But I saw Kevin Morby play at a party he had outside the city at a really cozy place and it was awesome.
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of your music?
A) That I LOVE THEM and I can’t believe how sweet and kind people are coming up to me after shows. I feel like we’re all good friends.
