Sarantos – Baba Mama
By: Gladys Luna
Q) How would you best describe your sound?
A) I’ve always been a rocker at heart. I’m also an 80s child. So, the best way I can describe my music is a fusion of 80s rock mixed with modern pop and rock elements.
Q) Who are your Top 3 musical influences?
A) I’m inspired by many, many people but the top five are Survivor, Journey, and Ed Sheeran.
Q) With “Baba Mama” you reminded us that despite of the thousands of songs that can be written about love there is still one kind that is more often unexplored which is the love of a mother for their child. How did you come to the conclusion that this is the form of love you wanted to talk about this time?
A) It’s pretty simple. I love my mama. I don’t think moms get all the special attention they deserve so I thought I’d highlight them.
Q) What was the process for creating this emotional piece, “Baba Mama?”
A) I wanted to make a New Age song kinda like an Enya inspired song and then I also thought it’d be cool to have some baby sounds because no one has ever done anything like that.
Q) In the music video of “Baba Mama” we have the chance to explore the mother-child bond at its best. What did it mean to you to have this collection of stories enclosed in just one piece?
A) I wanted to make a music video that showed moms of all colors, religions and all over the world. There’s nothing like the bond of a mother and a child and it transcends all that stuff.
Q) Following the tradition of releasing a new single every month until completing a full album every year, how has this dynamic connected you with your audience and how did you come up with this innovative practice?
A) My fear is that the audience will get tired of me, but that hasn’t happened so far. I think the biggest advantage I have is that I’m always staying on their minds. Hopefully, they think the songs are getting much better and they continue to follow me on my journey. I’m working hard at it.
Q) With the release of every single, we get to experience a group of contrasting melodies and stories, how do you decide the path and order that these songs should follow?
A) I wish I could tell you there was a rhyme or reason. I’m always trying to be different and not get stale or boring. I don’t want to sound the same.
Q) When working on each one of your singles, do you perceive them as a full picture in advance or do you consider that every piece is shaped on its own until it tells a full story? What would you say is your main guidance on this process?
A) I think it all starts with the story. The story is developed, and the picture gets clearer and clearer. I wish I could make a huge production music video every single month but, unfortunately, since my music is not profitable, that’s just not possible. That’s the dream of the future though, to be able to really take the story even further into the music videos.
Q) As an all-around artist that goes from writing poetry to composing emotional pieces, is there something that you enjoy doing the most between all of this or do you experience it as a separate kind of expression?
A) The thing that I most enjoy is singing and live performance. Sometimes, though, it seems like that’s the thing I just least have time for unfortunately. I can’t wait to just be able to do live shows with the new song release every month
Q) I know that social media has been a way for you to connect with your audience. Why is that such an important aspect for you to the music that you make?
A) Social media is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, everybody’s always trying to talk to everyone including themselves. If something doesn’t get a bunch of clicks or go viral, we all get that sense of disappointment. But it is a powerful way to communicate with your fans and just be authentic. I’ve realized it’s important to just be who I am and that’s not going to appeal to everybody but that’s OK.
Q) Being an international success as you are now, what advice would you give to up and coming musicians?
A) First of all, I honestly do not consider myself an international success. But thank you for the compliment. Advice that I would most give them is to be yourself. Be authentic, be unique, be who you are, but just be a nice person.
Q) Without giving any spoilers aways, what can your fans expect this 2023 of Sarantos?
A) Every year in November I release the CD that has all eleven songs from that year that are released monthly. I’m going to add a twelfth song, which is a Christmas surprise and I’m also going to release a cool instrumental album in November which is a surprise too.
Q) Who would you most love to collaborate with on music in the future?
A) Taylor Swift
Q) What would you like to say to those who are fans or supporters of the music that you make?
A) YOU ARE AWESOME AND I LOVE YOU!!
