Interviews
Sean Giambrone – The Goldbergs
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) Well, of course, I’m in the middle of filming the third season of “The Goldbergs” as well as Cartoon Network’s “Clarence” where I play Clarence’s best friend, Jeff. Then, this summer I worked on a Disney film called Mark and Russell’s Wild Ride and what a wild ride it was. We filmed on Vancouver Island and my co-star in the film is Disney star, Joey Bragg. I play Russell and Joey plays Mark. It’s all about an adventure to get Mark’s license and I’m his best friend. It was a lot of fun because I got to be involved in car maneuvers that I’ve never done before and working with Joey was great. I also got to explore a different type of character who had to bring out an inner Joe Pesci every once in awhile.
Q) What originally made you want to be a part of “The Goldbergs?”
A) The script. The script was the first thing I was exposed to and I really loved it. It had me laughing out loud which was not typical for me. I actually had my whole family read it,and even my brother, Luke, laughed and he’s a tough critic.
Q) How was Adam originally described to you?
A) Somewhat geeky, fun-loving guy who loves to annoy his family.
Q) Was there anything you added to Adam that wasn’t scripted for you?
A) I try out different delivery choices on multiple takes and that may add to a different way of looking at Adam. I don’t know.
Q) The show is based off of creator Adam Goldberg’s life. How hands-on has he been with helping you find your character?
A) The thing is Adam is hands-on with every aspect of “The Goldbergs.” It’s the story of his life so he would be, but there’s only so much of Adam that can go around. He shares home videos of himself interacting with his friends and family and guides me with certain key shot for shot remakes of his memories as much as he can.
Q) Where do we pick up with the Goldberg family in Season 3?
A) The premiere episode of Risky Business was really a crazy episode of all of the characters, which is pretty symbolic of the real Goldberg family. Then, in the second episode you’ll see the changes that have occurred with me, highlighting my puberty thingy.
Q) You have great chemistry with your onscreen family. Did that come instantly or did you spend time to bond together?
A) It’s kind of crazy because it was pretty instantaneous, even during the pilot. With two seasons under our belt, this group is getting pretty tight and we really understand each other.
Q) What have been some of your most memorable moments from filming?
A) My first scene with the entire family was when we were coming out of the house to see Pop’s car. I was so new to everything and I didn’t know to go to my mark. I ran out of the house and had to look like I was running to see my favorite person in the world (George Segal) who I had just met him and he’s a legend to top it all off. It was just so wild. Another scene happened this season where I had to stand in the spotlight on stage in front of a packed audience in an auditorium and had to practically sing a cappella. I have to say that singing is not my thing. It was funny that the more my voice cracked, the more the director liked it.
Q) What have you learned about life in the 80’s that you may not have known before appearing on the show?
A) I was actually a big fan of the 80s because I watched almost all of the John Hughes movies before getting the part and I loved 80s music. There definitely have been a few surprises like the Milli Vanilli incident. I didn’t know that was a real thing when I read the script. The video game things have been cool too like the Power Glove that you use with the Nintendo system.
Q) What do you think it is about “The Goldbergs” that has made it a quick fan favorite show?
A) I think it’s parents being able to reflect back on their childhood and being able to share it with their kids. Also, just really great writing.
Q) You are a part of social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive when episodes premiere?
A) Yes, I do love it. You’re never sure how the show’s being received so it’s awesome to hear how people feel instantaneously as it airs. And there’s groups like The Goldnerds that have been loyally following. Their support is awesome and so appreciated.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and the show?
A) Thank you so much for being a fan. All of you have been so great and supportive on social media and in person. I love when I get a chance to meet a fan because they’re just so great.
