SEAWAVES – The Soundtrack

By  |

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Somewhere on the edge of synthpop, indie, ambient and cinematic. We don’t like to stick to specific genres, we just write what we’re feeling at the time.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Sigur Rós, Brian Eno, Coldplay, M83, Hans Zimmer.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Her.”

A) “Her” is all about finding yourself presented through the journey of a lead female. The world is now full of so called experts who feel they can help you, but a lot of it is conflicted. The real power does lie within. Everybody has the power to reach their full potential.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think because the lyrics tell a specific story of boldness and empowerment fans can relate to their own inner determination to succeed in life.

Q) Talk about the process behind selecting “Adventures” to be the first single off the LP.

A) “Adventures” sums up the direction we’re going with on the album. The lead intro acoustic guitar, the hazy bells melody and contrasting vocals give a hint of where we’re going on this album. When the fans get to hear all three volumes of The Soundtrack they’ll hopefully have been on an adventure of ups and downs.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) 90% of the time we write the music before lyrics away from the studio. Usually we will start off with an experimental pad or loop or riff on guitar/piano etc. Then, base the rest of the instruments around that “main sound.” The prime example being the song “Her” as the opening sound is a heavily processed loop that sounded pretty cool and then when we had that we already heard in our minds what instruments would.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) We produce, record and master all our music ourselves in our personal studios with pretty much no outside assistance. We’ve always done it like this and it feels good being in control of your own sound and learning all the time what works. A lot of hidden gems can be found in the production as opposed to the actual writing stage itself.

Q) What can fans expect from a live SEAWAVES performance?

A) When we’ve performed live we use a projector to showcase little stories between tracks. We want to create the illusion of watching back a dream and give the audience a visual experience to take away.

Q) What songs off your The SoundtrackLP are you looking forward to performing live?

A) We’re currently not performing live, but we do have some great ideas for when we do. Our music has so many elements it’s tricky to perform as just a duo so we’ll be looking to get in session performers. A SEAWAVES tour would be amazing, but one thing we don’t want to do is put on a half-baked show/tour. It must represent our vision.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your new LP as a whole?

A) An escape from everyday life. We don’t put out music unless it’s come from an inspired place and if the listener connects with that then we’ve done our job. Our job is to translate our current feelings into a form other people can connect to.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) Our first ever show was Sheffield, UK, which was pretty special. Everything went perfectly. Our second show everything went wrong so since then we’ve been a little more cautious.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) We really enjoyed our collabs with Timecop1983 (synth-wave producer). We are big admirers of his style and genuinely enjoyed what we worked on together. The fans also enjoyed the match-up between us as well!

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Currently, I’m listening to a lot of Jeremy Soule who I am a big fan of. I love the way he combines traditional cinematic elements with modern FX processing and non-traditional sounds.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Social media allows us to share our music to the other side of the world. It’s amazing for us as artists to reach fans we’d never be able to reach. The downside is now social media is so congested it can feel like trying to shout underwater. It can be a little disheartening to us as artists (and other artists can relate) where you may have worked on a track for six months and Facebook decides to show 10% of your fans this track, yet we can post a picture of our dog which gets shown to 90% of our fans?! [laughs]

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thanks for all the continued support and enjoying what we bring to the music world. We have always loved to write music and tell our story, but it feels amazing to know that there are loyal fans of ours out there listening and eagerly awaiting another release from us. We are so pleased that it brings happiness to your lives.
