Interviews
Serena Foster – Out of My System
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Please tell us about your song “Out of My System” and what inspired it?
A) This song is a super special one for me. I wrote this with my friend Carl Olson and when we were writing that day in the studio we decided to write about leaving the past behind us. This record is all about self-love, rising above bad memories and shedding any or all negativity from your life. It was a really amazing experience getting to create this track with Carl, as well as one of my really good friends Hamster who produced it with Carl as well. This song is definitely inspired by punk pop music from the 2000s, like Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne.
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the instant fan feedback you’ll be receiving to the track?
A) I am, indeed! And, as my fans know, I am a huge mental health and kindness advocate and I myself struggle with anxiety tied to the use of social media often. I have recently found that to enjoy social media, means to simply have fun with it, and just be yourself and not take it too seriously. I cannot wait for my amazing fans to enjoy my new song and spread their love all around this track and music video online everywhere.
Q) During the songwriting process, were there any specific lyrics that you wrote that really resonated with you?
A) Yes, definitely. One of my favorite lyrics from this song is “I’ll put me first so that you can see” because putting yourself first should always be a top priority. Writing that into a song really gave me an incredible feeling of empowerment.
Q) How will the music video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The music video, directed by Kate B, plays a huge part into the message of this track. I told Kate that I wanted to create something similar to the Britney Spears “Stronger” music video where by the end of the video you see Britney go through an entire transformation. Kate took that and went above and beyond, creating a concept and style I have never done before in my career or in any of my other music videos. It is especially exciting getting to say mine and Kate’s own production company, Starglow Productions, produced this video. It is truly a project out of my heart’s desire, and I could not be prouder to share this with the world.
Q) During the last year, what were some of the songs and/or albums that sustained and inspired you?
A) Lady Gaga’s latest album Chromatica, Dua Lipa’s album Future Nostalgia and Taylor Swift’s album folklore were the three most impactful albums I listened to last year hands down. I love all my fellow pop queens.
Q) What has been the best advice you’ve been given when it comes to finding success as a musician?
A) Do not take on too many projects at the same time. Find a balance and stick to it. Balance is key.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Right now, I have been listening non-stop to Kacey Musgraves latest album “star-crossed” and I am obsessed with it. I love her voice and how she is just so unapologetically herself.
Q) What’s next for you? Are you working on any new material?
A) I am always working on new material and hope to release my next project possibly in January! I love creating music and will never stop writing new songs for my loving fans. <3
Q) COVID has put a stop to live performances for some time. Do you have any shows planned for the future or some upcoming livestreams?
A) I will very soon. I cannot wait to play shows again. I miss my fans so much. I miss the feeling of being on stage so much. Stay tuned for that.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH AND CANNOT WAIT FOR MANY MORE ERAS, SHOWS, AND MEMORIES TO COME WITH YOU ALL! <3 STAY TUNED ALL OF MY SUPPORTERS AND FANS!
