Shadowhunters – Dust and Shadows
By: Jessica Wolff
Standing on the rooftop, Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) shoots arrows into the night skyline. Jace Wayland (Dominic Sherwood) interrupts his target practice and tries to convince him that the murder of Jocelyn Fray (Maxim Roy) by the demon possessing his body was not his fault. Jace reminds him that he needs his help since Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) stole the soul-sword, but Alec yells at him that he can’t undo the murder of his and Clary Fray’s (Katherine McNamara) mother. He activates a rune and escapes the conversation by jumping off the roof.
Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) says a Jewish prayer in honor of Jocelyn and Clary admits that she’s worried about Luke Garroway (Isaiah Mustafa) as he hasn’t called her since Jocelyn’s death. Simon reassures her that he’s just grieving in his own way and Clary admits to Simon that she was devastated when he died. She recalls how happy she was when he was brought back to life and decides to find a way to bring her mother back. Simon doesn’t think that it’s a good idea, but Clary doesn’t want to accept her mother’s death. Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) refuses to help Clary in her quest to revive Jocelyn, but admits that it is possible through dark magic. Clary asks him what he would do if he had the chance to bring his mother back and he tells her that his mother killed herself when she found out he was a warlock. Though he won’t help her, he gives her a picture of her and Jocelyn from many years ago. Clary and Simon leave the loft and Clary tells Simon that she wants to be alone.
Victor Aldertree (Nick Sagar) addresses the institute about Valentine Morgenstern’s attack on the City of Bones and Jace’s exoneration of the charges against him. People glare at Jace as he talks to Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia) about Alec and Isabelle apologizes to Jace for letting him be captured by Victor. He forgives her, as her deal allowed them to save Alec. Clary stands over her mother and admits that she should have gone to Idris with her. Jace comes over and asks her how she’s doing. Clary admits that she’s annoyed with other people’s attempts to comfort her and that her emotions are clouding her judgment. She asks him how he feels after realizing that he’s lost his mother as well. He admits that he would have liked more time to get to know her.
Clary looks through the institute’s records of warlocks and visits the office of Dr. Iris Rouse (Stephanie Belding). Rouse opens the door and is surprised to see a shadowhunter standing on her doorstep. Clary asks her to raise her mother from the dead, even though there is dark magic involved. Rouse tells her that all magic is equal in her eyes. She demonstrates her power and resurrects a dead crow in her yard. Inside, Rouse shows Clary her practice and introduces her to her goddaughter, Madzie (Ariana Williams). Rouse tells her that she will need a lock of Jocelyn’s hair for the spell and asks for a favor from her as payment.
Simon goes home to his mother, Elaine Lewis (Christina Cox), and embraces her. He apologizes for not going to dinner the other night and tells her that he appreciates her. He then tells her that if he moves back home, she can’t be worried about where he goes in the middle of the night. His mother is just glad to have him home and asks him to invite Clary and Jocelyn over for dinner sometime. Jace goes to see Victor, who reprimands him for letting Valentine escape with the soul-sword. He points out that he saved Victor’s life and Victor tells him that he will have the blood of everyone who has died or will die to protect the soul-sword on his hands. Jace offers to go on the mission to retrieve the sword, but Victor tells him that he is banned due to his lack of discipline.
Magnus finds Alec on his balcony and tries to comfort him for what happened. Alec asks him how he felt after turning in Camille and Magnus admits that he felt terrible. Magnus tries to reassure him that what happened wasn’t his fault and Alec confesses that he doesn’t know how to face Clary. He tells Alec that he’s confident in his determination to make things right. Jace sees Clary cut hair off of Jocelyn’s body and confronts her. She confirms his suspicions and assures him that Rouse will bring their mother back. Jace warns her about the potential dangers, but Clary is too excited by the prospect of spending more time with her mother to listen.
Simon’s sister, Rebecca Lewis (Holly Deveaux), comes into this room and tries to open up the curtains. Simon tells him to keep them shut, lying that he burns easily. Unconvinced, she finds a bottle of blood on his desk and can tell that it’s real despite Simon’s insistence that it’s stage blood. Rebecca tells him to get it together and pours his blood down the toilet. During their training session Jace and Isabelle talk about Alec and Clary. Jace finds that Isabelle’s wound hasn’t healed yet and that Victor will never let her go on the mission to see the Iron Sisters. Isabelle assures him that she will be fine and that Victor doesn’t have to know. Isabelle struggles in the fight and Jace tells her to get her wound looked at.
Isabelle goes to see Victor and asks to be put on the mission to see the Iron Sisters. He asks about her health and she tells him she’s healed. However, he insists that he look at her wound and finds that it hasn’t healed. He gives her a substance called yin fen to heal her wounds and she feels relief immediately. Giving her the tin, he tells her to use it sparingly. Alec finds Clary looking at the picture of Jocelyn that Magnus gave her and she is not happy to see him. He tells her that he would do anything to bring Jocelyn back and she tells him of his plan. Alec offers to go with her, to make up for what he did.
At Rouse’s practice she assumes that Alec is Clary’s boyfriend and both Alec and Clary look horrified by the suggestion. Rouse mentions that she needs to finish the paperwork for the blood oath and Alec is scared about Clary owing Rouse a favor. Clary tells Alec that she wants to go through with this and Rouses tells him to wait outside. Alec doesn’t want Clary to go in alone, but she assures him that things will be fine. He sees Madzie watching him from the waiting room and says hello to her. Inside, Rouse begins the process and tells Clary to think of a cherished memory of her mother.
Simon frantically calls for more blood and his mother comes in. She finds his dinner uneaten and is worried about him. He is worried about telling her the truth, but she assures him that she will love him no matter what. Simon tells her that he is a vampire, but she thinks that this is an elaborate prank. He tells her that he’s not joking and tells her that he is getting hungry since he doesn’t have any more blood. She tells him that she believes him and that things are going to be okay.
During the resurrection spell a crow flies into the window. Clary is spooked, but Rouse tells her to focus and snaps the crow’s neck. Outside, Alec talks to Madzie and asks where her toys are. As she points upstairs, he notices that she has gills on her neck and compliments her on them. He hears crying upstairs and goes to investigate. Rouse encourages Clary to keep going, but she calls off the spell. After apologizing for wasting her time, Rouse tells her that she’s still holding her to the deal she signed and that she still owes her a favor.
Alec finds a woman, Leigh (Jenny Raven), cradling a demon baby in her arms. Rouse tells Clary that she wants to impregnate Clary with a warlock baby. Clary tries to run, but Rouse traps her with her magic. When Clary points out that demons can’t impregnate shadowhunters, Rouse assures her that she’s found a way. Clary realizes that she spiked her tea with an elixir and Rouse tells her that she will wipe her memories one she gives birth to the baby. Alec asks Leigh where Clary is, but she doesn’t know who Clary is. After finding the room previously occupied by Clary empty, he demands to know where Clary is.
Jace comments that Isabelle is looking better and asks if she’s seen Clary. She tells him that she left with Alec a few hours ago and Jace is worried. Alec demands that Leigh help her and she tells him about the babies that are born here and adopted. Clary wakes up in a dark room and tries to escape. A demon approaches her and she freaks out. Jace and Isabelle arrive as Alec slams Rouse against a wall and demands that she tells him where Clary is. She tortures him with her magic and Madzie tells her to stop. Isabelle arrives and attempts to fight Rouse. She takes Madzie through a portal and tells Isabelle that Clary still owes her a favor before disappearing.
Clary attempts to fight off the demon, but is unable to. She has a vision and activates a rune that shoots sunlight out of her hand to destroy the demon. Jace is shocked to see her previously unknown power and tells her to keep it secret for now. Simon’s mother calls a doctor, worried about Simon’s condition. She opens the door to find that Simon has bitten into a rat and is feeding off of it. Isabelle applies more yin fen on her back and feels the same euphoria as the first time.
The institute lays the fallen victims to rest. Clary enters and tells Jace that she can’t do this. He assures her that she can and offers her his hand as they walk over to Jocelyn’s body. Clary is overcome with emotion as she intends to announce Jocelyn’s name to the declaration of the dead. Jace wraps her in his arms and announces Jocelyn’s name for her. They rejoin Alec and Isabelle and watch as the dead’s spirits are released from their bodies. Somewhere in the forest, Luke is in great distress as he sees Jocelyn’s spirit enter the atmosphere while he shifts.
