Shadowhunters – Stronger Than Heaven
By: Jessica Wolff
Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) asks Lilith (Anna Hopkins) how she heard of his services, and she lies that she is a friend of Ragnor Fell. He tells her that he’ll do anything for a friend of Ragnor’s and she asks for a way to force someone to fall out of love. Magnus doesn’t advise doing it, as heartache is preferable to losing all feeling for the person. Lilith explains that it’s for a former lover of hers whose romantic feelings are impeding his ability to do his duties. Magnus agrees to help and gives her the potion. He tells her to put a bit of her soul into the potion, as she is the one he needs to get over.
Jace Herondale (Dominic Sherwood) shares what he learned about his mother with Clary Fairchild (Katherine McNamara). She promises that they’ll figure out his problem together, but he tells her he’s considering going to the city of bones for treatment. Clary advises against it, arguing that he didn’t start having problems until she brought him back. Jace argues that him being brought back was merely a trigger for his mental health issues. She warns him that the clave may declare him unfit for duty, but Jace asks what other choice he has. Clary offers to try and contact the angel, Ithuriel (Benjamin Sutherland) for help.
Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) interrupts Magnus as he looks through a box of mementos. Magnus hastily shuts the box and notices that Alec is wearing his shirt. He adjusts the sleeves of the shirt with a wave of his hand, and Alec suggests that he get a shirt of his own. Alec stops Magnus from conjuring one, and clarifies that he thinks he should move in with him. Magnus tells him that it’s too soon, as they’ve only been seeing each other for less than two months. Alec argues that they’ll be closer, but Magnus insists there’s no such thing and that’s he learned to take his time with things.
Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) gets into an argument with the manager at the Hunter’s Moon and spots Jace drinking at the bar. Jace tells Simon that he’s taking a personal day, and asks what happened. Simon explains that someone called posing as his manager and cancelled his performance. Jace asks what happened, and Simon tells him about the mark. He promises to look into it for him, and Simon is surprised that he’s willing to help. Jace tells him that he doesn’t care about what happens to him, but Clary does.
Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia) calls Clary and asks for wardrobe advice, admitting that it’s for a date with Charlie Cooper (Brooks Darnell). She insists that she’s going so that he will leave her alone, and then suggests that she cancel it when Clary questions her reasoning. Clary tells her that she deserves a night off, and visits Luke Garroway (Isaiah Mustafa) at the station.
Clary tells Luke that she wants to speak to his sister, Cleophas Garroway (Lisa Berry), and he asks her why. Once he assures her that she can talk to him, Clary tells him the truth about what happened to Jace. She admits that having to lie to everyone is eating her up inside, and that Jace hasn’t been himself lately. Meanwhile, Lilith summons a demon and orders it to track Clary’s scent and to bring a piece of her soul back.
Jace visits Simon and Kyle’s (Chai Hansen) apartment, and is suspicious of Kyle. He asks to speak to Simon in private, and Kyle leaves the apartment. Jace informs Simon that Luke’s pack didn’t cancel his performance, and asks for more information about the mark. Simon admits that he was worried about the mark until he moved into the apartment. As he is about to leave Magnus’ loft, Alec is tempted to open the box. He gives in and finds a bunch of mementos, including a photo of Magnus with a man named George accompanied by a love letter.
Clary teleports Luke to Cleophas’ hiding place, and Clary asks why Cleophas went there. Luke admits that he brought her there and that the farm belongs to him. He tells Clary that Cleophas has closed herself off from him, but he knocks on the door and identifies himself. Cleophas opens the door and embraces Clary.
Jace is suspicious of Kyle and his convenient apartment. Despite Simon’s arguments, Jace searches through Kyle’s room, commenting that none of the things Simon loves outside is found in his room. Simon continues to defend Kyle, but Jace spots a plant in the room. Kyle returns home and demands to know what they’re doing in his room, but Jace puts his blade to Kyle’s throat and it glows. Jace identifies the plant as wolfsbane, and declares that Kyle is a werewolf.
Jace asks Kyle who he really is, and Kyle replies that he doesn’t have to explain. Simon is hurt that Kyle lied to him, but Jace puts down his weapon once Kyle reveals that he prays to Lupus. Jace explains that it means that Kyle is a part of a werewolf warrior organization. Kyle explains that he was sent in to intervene because of the mark on Simon’s forehead, and Jace believes his story.
Simon argues that he’s not a job, and is offended that the apartment is a trap. He accuses Kyle of cancelling his performance, and tells him that he doesn’t him to protect him. Kyle argues that he would have eventually told him the truth, but Simon tells him that he respects people who are honest. Jace tells Simon to calm down, and Simon declares that he’s breaking his lease.
Underhill (Steve Byers) reports to Alec the status of the Institute’s system. Alec soon realizes that there’s more he wants to talk about, and Underhill thanks him for paving the way for other shadowhunters like himself to come out. Clary explains that she wants to speak Ithuriel, but Cleophas tells her that she herself has been unable to contact him. Cleophas believes that Clary can contact Ithuriel herself, but warns her that there are possible risks. Luke is concerned, but Clary is more concerned about Jace.
Isabelle goes on a date with Charlie, and he asks her to talk about herself. He comments on her jewelry, and Isabelle mentions that she made it. Charlie is impressed and asks if that’s what she does for a living. Isabelle lies that it is and explains that she is part of the family business with her brothers. Later, Isabelle steps out of the restaurant with Charlie and accepts his offer to continue the date.
However, Isabelle’s bracelet starts glowing and she tells him that she has a work thing. He offers to give her a ride, but she refuses and runs into an alleyway. She fights Lilith’s demon, but the demon splits into two as she strikes it. Isabelle manages to dispatch both of them, and Lilith declares that she needs to take matters into her own hands before flying away in demon form.
Isabelle is unable to reach her stele to heal herself before Charlie arrives at the alleyway. She snaps off her heel to sell the lie that she tripped because of it. Charlie declares that she needs stitches, but Isabelle is unable to talk her way out of it. He hands her the stele and helps her up. Cleophas instructs Clary on how to summon Ithuriel and a ring of light surrounds Clary once she follows them. Cleophas tells Clary that she and Luke need to leave during her conversation with Ithuriel, and shuts down Luke’s protests. Clary assures Luke that she’ll be fine and he leaves with Cleophas.
Jace finds Simon playing his guitar on the sidewalk and throws money into his case. Simon is thrilled until he sees that it’s Jace, and tells him to leave him alone. Jace asks if he’s planning to live in his van, and Simon replies that his van isn’t going to spy on him. Jace tells Simon that he should give Kyle a chance, as he shouldn’t reject help when it’s offered.
Alec confesses that he did something he isn’t proud of, and Magnus knows that he’s referring to the box, as he knows when things are out of order. Alec apologizes and Magnus accepts his apology. After comparing George to Alec, Magnus asks Alec if he’s jealous when he hesitates. Alec questions if George was the reason that Magnus hesitated about moving in, but Magnus explains that the box contains mementos of all of his former lovers that he’s outlived.
Alec suggests that one of his arrowheads will end up in the box, and Magnus replies that he doesn’t want to think about him being gone. Magnus reminds Alec that he’s immortal when Alec angrily points out that he will eventually move on from him. He insists that neither of them can change things, and asks to live in the now with the person he loves. Alec kisses Magnus, and tells him he loves him too.
Charlie finishes stitching Isabelle’s wound, and the process surprises her. She explains that she’s never needed stitches before, and Charlie tells her that he will cover the expenses as an apology for coming on too strong. Isabelle tells Charlie that she really did leave the date because of work, and she has to go. Isabelle walks back to Charlie and asks why he came after her. Charlie explains that he was concerned about her safety, and she kisses him and thanks him for the stitches.
As they wait, Cleophas calms Luke down by reminding him of a story from their childhood and urges him to have faith in Clary. Ithuriel lands in front of Clary, and warns her that she shouldn’t be there. Clary tries to explain the situation, but Ithuriel already knows about Jace. He assures her that her wish isn’t responsible for Jace’s predicament, but has made him more vulnerable. As he attempts to warn her about a greater threat, Lilith in demon form attacks Ithuriel, rips his heart out, and kills him. Lilith descends on Clary and extracts a piece of her soul before flying away.
Clary wakes up in Cleophas’ house, and Cleophas asks what happened. However, she is unable to fly away. Simon goes to the apartment and ignores Kyle’s attempts to talk to him. He tells Kyle that he got his performance back, and Kyle warns him of the dangers. Simon tells him that he’s willing to allow his help, but only on his terms. Kyle attempts to argue, but Simon insists that he still going to live his life.
Jace goes to Alec and sees that he’s upset. Alec doesn’t give any details other than it involves Magnus, and asks Jace how he is. Jace tells Alec that he’s decided to go to the Silent Brothers for treatment, and assures Alec he understands the risk. Alec promises to go with him, but Jace reminds him that he won’t be allowed and that he has to face this fight on his own.
Jace arrives at the Hunter’s Moon and leaves a message for Clary about his decision. He sees Kyle standing nearby and asks him if he’s seen Clary. Simon steps onto stage and thanks his roommate for helping him get there. As Simon performs, Lilith approaches Jace at the bar. She asks him to get her a drink, but he replies that he has a girlfriend. Lilith explains that she doesn’t mean it like that, and Jace gets her a drink. She slips the potion into his drink when he turns away, and comments that his girlfriend must be special. He agrees, and Lilith toasts to true love. Jace drinks the potion, and Lilith declares that nothing will come between them. She asks how he feels, and he replies that he feels like a new man.
