Shenna – Blue Memories
By: Matthew Pepe
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my sound as Indie-Pop with an R&B influence!
Q) How has it evolved since Dream in Color?
A) Wow! I was so green when Dream In Color first released. I had no idea what I was doing and would stay up all night researching blogs and shows. It honestly developed me into who I am today still being an independent artist. I can honestly say I have grown my own fan base and have found who I am as an artist.
Q) Talk about the message behind your song “Blue Memories.”
A) “Blue Memories” is the thoughts you may battle with yourself in your head regarding self-doubt and fear. I feel as someone in the public eye it was important to tell others who may look up to me or people like me that we also go through these battles and that it is okay to admit it and to ask for help if needed.
Q) What is your creative and songwriting process?
A) I recently have been inspired by things I see or experience on my daily life. I just start recording voice memos and write down what sticks! I sometimes hop on a piano or keyboard and make melodies and present it later to my producer!
Q) Blue Memories is a statement EP. What was the main message you were trying to get across to the world and your fans with this EP?
A) Thank you so much! The main message of the EP is different things that can trigger depression such as social media, being hard on yourself by striving for perfection, and being surrounded by superficial people, etc. I wanted to let others know that mental health is important and that anyone can be going through it.
Q) When most artists have something to say on a topical subject, they may write one song about it. What are some themes and messages prominent to this latest EP?
A) I feel one of the main themes is that social media is toxic. We look through a screen and feel we know others through short videos and photos and may feel like our life’s are less significant. Myself, as someone in the public eye, I wanted to break that perfect life stereotype and show different stages of depression and how to overcome it.
Q) You coordinated the release of Blue Memories to coincide with World Mental Health Day. Why is mental health awareness important to you?
A) I feel that a lot of people on social media especially those who are starting to gain a following online only post the rainbows and sunshine online. I want to always keep it real and authentic with my supporters because anyone can be going through this. I want them to know that, hey, I am an artist but I go through what you go through too and we have to talk these things out to heal and grow.
Q) What are some of your favorite tracks off the EP?
A) I love “Blue Memories” and “Alone” because they both make me feel so alive when I perform them live!
Q) What did it mean to you to perform in front of your hometown fans at the “All Things Go Fall Classic” in DC?
A) It felt like a homecoming show! It made me feel like I had to go harder than ever because all my day one followers and supporters were there!
Q) Will you be touring again in the US in the near future after you return from Japan?
A) I’m currently lining up a lot of things for 2020 in America and also plan to go back to Japan next year, too!
Q) What can fans expect from a live Shenna performance?
A) You can expect a story while coming to a Shenna show. I want people to feel the emotions of the music by being involved with chants, dance moves, and high energy!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of your music?
A) Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You all keep me going and motivate me every day! Always stay true to who you are!
