Interviews
Shiloh Nelson – Feel The Beat
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for the film Feel The Beat.
A) Feel The Beat is a Netflix dance movie with Sofia Carson from Disney’s Descendants. Sofia plays April, a disgraced Broadway dancer who has to teach a group of misfit dancers to win a big competition. I play Ruby, one of the girls!
Q) What made you want to be a part of the movie?
A) I’ve always wanted to be in a Netflix original movie and this movie was perfect for me. It has such heart and it’s a movie about family at its core.
Q) How was Ruby originally described to you?
A) A face full of freckles, eager to please, optimistic and positive. She’s one of the New Hope dancers who finds her calling on the team.
Q) What kind of training/choreography did you go through to prepare to play a dancer?
A) We had a whole month of dance training before beginning the filming of the movie! I had never physically trained for a role like that. But by the end, I was too good of a dancer for my character and the producer had Mia Michaels choreograph mistakes back in for me which made me super happy.
Q) Where you familiar with any of your costars before Feel The Beat?
A) I was a fan of Sofia’s before booking this role as I watched her in Descendants and A Cinderella Story. When I met her at the callback, I was star struck! Then when I met her again on set, I was blown away with how kind she was. Apparently, Lidya [Jewett] and I were at a charity event together a year before and were in a group pic together, but neither of us remember it at all! We laughed about it when we both realized.
Q) What kind of advice did director Elissa Down offer that you took to heart while shooting?
A) To always be straight forward. I feel so lucky to have gotten to be directed by her. She was such a role model for me.
Q) What were some of your favorite scenes to film?
A) The really bad dance at the beginning! Before Sofia’s character April teaches the girls how to dance, we go to a competition and the dance is so bad. It was fun because they let us add our quirks and mess-ups and it was so much fun to just be bad and the dance turned out so hilarious. Honestly, all of the dancing scenes were so fun.
Q) How did you shake off a long day of filming?
A) Usually playing Fortnite or Minecraft with my brothers over mic chat so we can talk. I missed my brothers a lot while filming! My siblings are my best friends.
Q) What do you hope viewers take away from watching Feel The Beat?
A) I hope this film makes them smile and hop off the couch and dance!
Q) What is it about the app TikTok that drew you to join and how do you come up with your videos?
A) I love how open and free the platform is! Anyone can make a video and it can get seen.
Q) What would you suggest to someone who is considering making their first TikTok video?
A) Be original. Put your own twist on things and don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you?
A) Thank you! Definitely that first and foremost. Then, I hope that you enjoy the videos I make and that I can make your day a little brighter and happier.
