Skyzz – Without You
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Imagine if Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes had a child who grew up under the Latin American sun – that would be Skyzz. My sound is like a warm embrace of tropical nostalgia, blending rhythms that dance through your heart with lyrics that speak straight to your soul helping you feel heard, understood and validated.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I am heavily influenced by genres like Pop, R&B, and Reggaetón. Growing up in Belize I would always listen to Latin super stars like Enrique Iglesias, Daddy Yankee, Selena and some of the more contemporary pop artists, like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.
Q) I understand that your new single stems from the passing of a dear friend. So, our condolences. Please talk about the story behind “Without You.”
A) When I was writing without you, I was going through a tough transition because of the passing of a loved one. Fortunately, my close friend and writing partner, Michelle Gold, helped me navigate this season by assisting me in writing this song. Originally, the song was meant to be a slow ballad, but it gradually transformed into something more upbeat, incorporating my Belizean roots and Latin culture with strong Pop influences. Witnessing this fusion was truly beautiful.
I vividly recall being in the studio when I stumbled upon the guitar riff for the song’s intro and immediately knew it was the perfect fit. My favorite part of the song is the second verse, where the melody and lyrics seamlessly flow together – it gets me every time. Vocally, the most challenging part for me was the bridge. It required vulnerability and authenticity, reflecting my true emotions as I mourned the loss of my friend. It was a truly vulnerable moment. The bridge serves as a stark contrast to the rest of the song, adding depth and making it even more impactful.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I believe what really resonates with fans about this song is its genuine vulnerability and relatability. Losing someone dear to us feels like losing a piece of ourselves, doesn’t it? Many of us struggle to cope with this reality. It’s as if without them, a part of us is missing, too. For some, it takes a lifetime to come to terms with such profound loss. My heartfelt wish is that this song can offer some solace and comfort to those who are grieving the loss of loved ones, in whatever way it can.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) At the moment, I don’t have a video ready for this track. However, I’m hopeful that in the near future, I’ll be able to release one. I’ve been brainstorming a few ideas for the music video, and if I do end up filming it, I believe it could make a significant impact.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) When I think back on this song, it all started with a guitar, strumming a few chords and letting the ideas flow freely. It’s interesting because I don’t always need music before I start writing, but having those initial chords really helps ignite my creativity. Typically, I like to start by crafting the chorus first and then let the rest of the song fall into place naturally from there.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I would say I primarily recorded and produced this song in my home studio. I reached out to a few individuals whom I deeply respect in terms of their expertise in production and I had them listen to the song and offer their critiques. Based on their feedback, I made the necessary adjustments using my studio program.
So, yes, I had a significant role to play in the production of this song.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) It’s funny you mention that because I’m actually in the final stages of recording my second EP for this year. I have several singles lined up, and I can’t wait to release them. Look out for a song called “Paradise.” You will not be disappointed, I promise.
Q) In 2022 you curated and performed a concert at the Don on Danforth. Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Having my first concert at The Don on Danforth was an incredible experience, and I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity they gave me. One of my favorite performance venues so far has to be Square One in Mississauga – the stage there was simply breathtaking. I’m eagerly anticipating playing at venues like El Mocambo and History next. Perhaps the second Skyzz concert could take place there? It’s definitely something to look forward to!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) You know, it would truly be a dream come true if the opportunity arose for me to collaborate on a song with Tate McRae. I’m a huge fan of her voice, and I truly believe that together, we could create a killer track. Fingers crossed that it happens!
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) There’s an artist I recently discovered named Cameron Sanderson whose music really resonates with me on a deep level. I highly recommend checking him out; his sound is something special. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of Shawn Desman as well. I’m loving his new songs, and it’s great to see him back in the music industry!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I believe social media has become the modern-day stage. Many in our generation feel more comfortable communicating online due to social anxiety, rather than face-to-face interactions. If you want to connect with this generation, having a presence on social media is crucial. It’s not only easier to reach them on a daily basis, but also on a global scale by posting content online. It’s an opportunity we shouldn’t overlook.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) From the deepest part of my heart, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported me this far. Your encouragement means the world to me. But let me tell you, this is just the beginning. We’re only getting started, and I’m bursting with excitement to share with you all what I have in store for the future! Stay tuned—it’s going to be amazing!
