Slayloverboy – No Bad Slays
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Just very authentic to me and nothing but genuine heart.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Bones, Lil Peep, Ronnie Radke, Kurt Cobain to name a smart few
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Where Do We Go.”
A) “Where Do We Go” just tells the story of me leaving my hometown, trying to get away from the drugs and toxicity, and thanking my girlfriend for sticking by me through it.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I feel like music is the most subjective art form in the world but if anybody were to connect to anything in the song it would definitely be the genuine lyrics
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video conveys more of the atmosphere of the song rather than the actual message, so I just really wanted it to look like an electronic futuristic forest just wandering around aimlessly.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It really just depends on how I want to go about a song. Sometimes I can write a full song before ever hearing the music.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Most of the time I just have producers just send me whatever their feeling at the time or I search YouTube for hours until I find the perfect sound I’m looking for.
Q) Your new album No Bad Slays is out now. What are some themes you explore on it?
A) Moving on while still not being able to let go of the past, friends I thought would be there forever completely losing contact and just over all mental health.
Q) What tracks on the album challenged you the most creatively?
A) The tracks that challenged me the most were definitely the dance songs just because I really haven’t done that before and I was really trying to experiment.
Q) Which song(s) for No Bad Slays hold a special significance for you and why?
A) The song that has the most significance is definitely “Nobody Even Say What’s Up No More” and that’s because I wrote that about all the high school friends I had. They didn’t bother continuing the friendship as soon as I dropped out.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from exploring this new album?
A) You can slay anything if you put your mind to it.
Q) Will there be an upcoming tour to promote this new album?
A) As much as I would love to tour, I think we’re just saving our resources for something big that we have planned more towards summer.
Q) What song(s) on the album are you most looking forward to performing live?
A) Mainly the dance songs like “Painkiller” and “I Feel Like I’m Dreaming.” I had great energy when I was recording those, so I feel like they’re going to be really fun live.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I’d love to eventually be able to collaborate with Oliver Francis. I’ve looked up to bro since I was fifteen years old. He’s got some of the best delivery and lyrics in the scene.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to idles like crazy. [laughs] They have a song called “The Beachland Ballroom.” I have to play at least five times in one sitting. I resonate heavily with the track.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s important for me to utilize my social medias because it’s a way that I can really connect with the people and really show them who I am. As a smaller artist it’s hard to really find your fanbase, but with a solid social media presence they’ll basically come to you.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would give each of you guys a hug if I could but just know the slay continues… We’re sending it into the atmosphere this year.
