Longtime fans of “The Smurfs” find them hitting the big screen once again. Your favorite little blue creatures are back and this time Papa Smurf has a secret. Thus begins a new adventure with new voices and a fun new story to tell. Smurfs film is a sweet new movie that will give kids and adults alike an enjoyable experience at the cinema.

Papa Smurf (John Goodman) has been keeping a secret…He has been hiding one of four magical books that are wanted by the Evil Wizards. If they can complete the full set, they would be able to take over the world. Meanwhile, No Name (James Corden) is struggling with his identity as the Smurf name-keeper is almost out of options. He heads off into the woods to sing out his feelings when he suddenly develops a magical power where light beams shoot out of his hands. Unfortunately, evil wizard Razamel (JP Karliak) notices and teams up with his brother Gargamel (also JP Karliak) to capture Papa Smurf in order force him to reveal the location of the final book.

Famous voices abound with Natasha Lyonne as Mama Poot, Dan Levy as Razamel’s assistant and Sandra Oh as Moxie. And did I mention that Rihanna is Smurfette? That said, I’d highly recommend keeping an eye out though for Sound Effects Smurf (Spencer X) as his vocal talents remind me of the incredible skills of Michael Winslow. Screenwriters Pam Brady and Peyo also do a decent job of setting up the current Smurf world along with the bad guys who are intent on taking over their community. Special mentions go out to Papa Smurf and his brothers Ken (Nick Offerman) and Ron (Kurt Russell) for their heroic efforts to protect the book from the evil wizards. A big shout out also goes to Chris Miller for directing this latest iteration of Smurf shenanigans.

Smurfs is a sweet watch filled with heart, humor and plenty of action. Little viewers will enjoy watching the beloved blue creatures travel through different dimensions and sing along to catchy new tunes. If you’re looking for something for the kiddos that comes with a message of kindness, this film is worth the watch.
