Interviews
Solid Gold – Towns
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) It’s definitely not jazz.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) 60’s Rock n Roll, 70’s experimentation, 80’s new wave and 90’s Hip Hop
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Towns.”
A) It started with simple beat and “synth” anchor line. It’s a rather mellow tone for us, but the simplicity of the arrangement and the precise mixing I think created a good starting off point for this upcoming batch of songs
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) It’s really good.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) There’s no real connection between the video and the song’s message. We conceived the idea of the video as a way to work the pacing of the song. We wanted to force the viewer to slow down their mind, relax and pay attention to the music.
Q) You guys have been on a bit of a music making hiatus since 2012. What inspired you to get back into the studio?
A) We have all stayed busy working on other projects and we have been playing shows here and there with Solid Gold when the occasion was right. It shouldn’t have taken this long for new music and, although there are a lot of different, complicated reasons for why, we plan on keeping a steady stream of jams for the near (and far) future.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) We have multiple different ways a SG song will start. But, yes, never lyrics before music.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Quite a bit
Q) You’ve got a hometown show coming up! What can fans expect from a live Solid Gold performance?
A) THRILLS
Q) Will there be an EP or full album coming soon?
A) Both yes.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) We used to spend a lot of time on the Lower East Side. We like London and we’d love to go back to Reykjavik. The people we meet and the time we spend off stage are usually what makes us fond of a place.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Working with RZA or Sade would be a dream.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) We take our own music way too seriously, so we mostly listen to sh***y music that makes us laugh.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) We are as minimally involved in social media as possible. We really have no interest in it as a medium and it is not something that we enjoy. For our purposes, it is nothing more than a mandatory tool for publicity. Any “connection” that users experience is perceived. We believe that the connective power of music lies in the act of listening.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Keep listening, there is more on the way.
