Splitting Up Together – Contact High
By: Ariba Bhuvad
Splitting Up Together is back from the winter hiatus! The episode opens to Lena (Jenna Fischer) having a hot and steamy dream about Martin (Oliver Hudson). Everyone has been telling her that she has unresolved feelings for him, and now this dream is solid proof. In the dream, she imagines him unsnapping her overalls, but wakes up before the dream can go on. She’s quite flustered upon waking up and is disheveled for most of the morning.
The kids take notice to it too but brush it off as their mom just “losing it.” While in the kitchen, Lena spots Martin in the backyard and starts to get hot and bothered by the sight of him. What normally would appear as him just cooling himself off looked to Lena as a seductive Martin throwing water all over himself. Lost in her daydream, Lena snaps out of it when Martin looks over. Out of panic, she runs into the fridge door and cracks her tooth.
Meanwhile, Maya (Diane Farr) is under the impression that she and Gene (Marc Evan Jackson) are now dating. In reality, Gene says he doesn’t even know her name and sees her as a repeat customer. He doesn’t exactly remember agreeing to enter a relationship with Maya, but this doesn’t deter Maya from pushing for it anyway.
To take care of her cracked tooth, Lena goes to the dentist and meets an elderly lady in the waiting area. She hands her a pill that will calm her anxiety, but Lena is already pretty loopy anyway and in the process starts writing Martin an email about her dream.
Once called back into the room, Lena starts talking to the dental hygienist about her dream about Martin. This prompts the dentist to use more laughing gas to knock her out, but that doesn’t go so well. The laughing gas gives her a high that results in a frantic and loopy panic attack and causes her to run around the dentist’s office.
Meanwhile, Martin’s girlfriend Paige (Ali Larter) is starting to get pretty annoyed by his whole situation with Lena. She finds it unusual and feels it’s negatively impacted their relationship. He was the one to insist that he stay at her place and then he ran off the minute Lena needed him. Unfortunately for Paige, it’s right then Martin gets a call about Lena’s dentist office mishap and has to leave once again. It’s safe to say this relationship is over.
When Martin arrives at the office, he doesn’t find Lena but instead just finds her belongings. This is because she ran off to the farmer’s market and is now dancing her sorrows away, high as a kite. Because of Lena being so high, Martin doesn’t think she should go to parent night. Of course, she doesn’t intend on listening to him and says she will be fine. Martin still doesn’t know about Lena’s dream, but the two have a heart to heart about their sex lives while they were married. It wasn’t that exciting and Lena wonders why they never got crazy and had sex in the car.
Their conversation is cut short when Lena realizes Martin’s car is being towed. They’re now stranded and worried about missing parent night, but don’t worry as its Gene and Maya to the rescue. They somehow make it to parent night despite Lena looking like a hot mess. Martin seemingly gives up on his relationship with Paige who calls while he is with Lena at the school.
After arriving home, Martin gets the steamy email Lena had written about her dream and learns all about it. She’s trying to be respectful of Paige, but when she learns that they’re most likely broken up Lena comes onto him. Just like the dream, Martin unsnaps two buttons but before he can get to the third he stops. Considering she’s still pretty high, he says they can revisit the third snap later on. What a tease!
The next morning, Lena lectures Maya about being with Gene while having brunch with their father. She’s confused as to what Maya is doing, but then again Lena is one to talk, right?
