Stacey – 2 Become 1
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Melancholy romance with psych-sprinkled dream-pop.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Carole King, Tame Impala, Lana Del Rey, Washed Out, Tobias Jesso, Jr.
Q) What made you decide to cover The Spice Girls’ song “2 Become 1?”
A) As a 90s girl I was Spice-obsessed. They were my first introduction to pop music. As a musician and songwriter now, “2 Become 1” is a song I wish I wrote – it’s playful, sexy and uplifting with extra delicious chord progressions and structural transitions.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think listeners connect to songs for tons of different reasons! For the cover, specifically, I was thinking it’d be the nostalgic element of modernizing a Spice Girls song.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m always in the studio working alongside my producer(s) exploring instrumentation and am the primary decision maker. Sometimes I’m reacting to something that my producers create, sometimes I’m on a synth or in the vocal booth coming up with counter melodies or harmonies. I like to be as hands-on as possible but it’s always a collaboration!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) When writing my own songs, so far, I’ve written everything on piano, start to finish. Usually sing-humming along to whatever I’m playing until I stumble upon a melody or lyric to build on, iterating with my iPhone Voice Memos. Once I feel like a song is finished, I’ll bring it into the studio with a producer to build out the full instrumental landscape.
Q) Your music has been featured on shows like “Lucifer,” “Orphan Black,” “Wynonna Earp” & more. How does that make you feel?
A) Incredibly lucky.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Stacey performance?
A) Lots of eye flirtation, roses (real and/or projected), lingerie, maybe some tears.
Q) What songs off your First Move EP are you looking forward to performing live?
A) I love playing them all! They all have different vibes and messages. “Trouble Is” is fun because I get to be a little more sassy/angry, which is an emotion that I rarely have or allow to surface.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your EP as a whole?
A) The best thing I could hope for is that they find something in it that resonates with them.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I love playing Toronto because it’s home. LA has also been really good to me and is essentially my second home! Mostly it’s about the people in the place.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Kevin Parker (Tame Impala)
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listen to Kacey Musgraves’ new album Golden Hour at least five times a week. The songwriting and genre blending is brilliant. Big fan.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s the main way people communicate nowadays (for better or for worse) and it’s the easiest way to get the word out about new releases, news, shows, events, etc. Also, it’s pretty magical to be able to connect with people from all over the world. Someone recently messaged me on my Instagram from Nigeria, who had heard one of my songs on a Spotify playlist. Before social media I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to hear from someone so instantly from across the world. So that’s pretty neat!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you for taking the time to listen! I know there’s a ton of beautiful music out there and everyone’s busy, so taking the time to lend your ears means a lot to me.
