Starless – Vampire
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) A little mysterious, a little dreamy, a little sensuality in there too. Definitely evocative.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I feel like everything I have listened to over the years and loved has influenced me in some interesting way. From K-Pop to electronic to pop to R&B to rock. Everything is interconnected in art, I think. Just a few artists I’ve loved over the years that have influenced me include Solar Twins, Garbage, Tame Impala, Grimes, Banks, Evanescence, The Weeknd, R3HAB, Pnau, Savant, Plaza and 4Minute. I could go on and on and on and on.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Vampire.”
A) “Vampire” is a destructive love story about two people using each other, feeding off each other. Both people get something out of the destruction. The analogy is a vampire feeding on their victim, but the victim enjoys it just as much finally and wants to be bitten.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think people connect to the unique electronic sound since I’ve never done a song quite like this before. It definitely has this alluring, exciting feel to it that I think fans like, too.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The narrative for the music video is of a woman at a photoshoot and plays on psychological horror themes of what is real and what isn’t, finally revealing the photographer may actually be a vampire. We get to watch this downward spiral into a dream/nightmare (or is it real?) with the woman and the vampire and the juxtaposed vampire and victim as they go down together into destruction.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Lyrics are the last thing that get polished in my process. I always start with a melody idea, get a first draft of lyrics going, then send it to my producer to put music to and then I fine tune the melody and polish the lyrics until I feel like the narrative has been fleshed out enough through the lyrics and in a fascinating way.
Q) You have a number of singles out recently. Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I’m planning on sticking to singles. It’s really fun working this way and then you constantly get to put music out into the world.
Q) With a number of songs out now, what are some of your favorite Starless songs to perform?
A) Of course “Vampire,” “Games (Dark mix), and “Deeper,” amongst others (I feel like I’d just end up listing all my songs [laughs]).
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are so many artists I would love to collab with like Kim Petras, Grimes, Troyboi, David Guetta and Mystery Skulls. I have a very long list; collabing with other artists is something I’m very drawn to artistically and dying to do.
Q) You’re also known for your voice over and anime work! What can you tease are some on-screen or behind-the-screen projects you are also working on?
A) I’m under NDA for everything at the moment except for Path to Nowhere. That game just came out on October 27th, so I was happy I finally got to announce it. It’s been such interesting characters and narrative so far for me as an actor and people seem to be loving it, so very happy.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) A lot of people use it daily, so it’s a great way to stay in touch with fans and let them know what projects I have coming up or behind the scenes.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Your support means the moon, the stars, the world to me. Thank you for coming along with me as I chase my dreams. <3 you all.
