Strays
By: Jamie Steinberg
If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if your dog could talk, Strays takes that premise and heightens it to an R-rated level. When a pup who sees his horrible owner through rose-colored glasses goes astray, he is befriended by a streetwise hustler who shows him the ropes. For a movie that mixes a dash of Seth Rogen and sprinkle of dog adventure, maybe you’ll actually enjoy watching Strays.
The film actually begins as on an upbeat note told through the eyes of optimistic Border terrier Reggie (Will Ferrell doing Buddy from Elf but in dog form) whose abusive owner (Will Forte) clearly hates him and wants to get rid of him. When Reggie finally hits the streets, he meets Bug (Jamie Foxx) who is street-savvy, foul-mouthed pal who is willing to show him the ropes – teaching him about humping couches and all. Also along for the romp are Australian shepherd Maggie (Isla Fisher) and Great Dane (Randall Park).
Director Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) harnesses his inner Seth Rogen for a sweet yet raunchy comedy. Of course, there are plenty of poop and pee jokes and there is a dash of wilderness mayhem (we’ve all seen the commercial where the pups trip on mushrooms). However, there is also a bit of heart to the film where writer Dan Perrault reminds us – in this unique way – about the need to identify and remove toxic relationships, the importance of self-worth and, certainly, the wonder of friendship.
Strays is not a film for kids – despite the talking dogs it features. There are plenty of gross-out gags and enough humor and heart to carry it to a box office success. While I, personally, thought the film was a bit much those of you who enjoyed Michael Cera and Jonah Hill movies from their heydays are sure to make it a smash.
