Interviews
Sunkrish Bala – Castle
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) Well, other than “Castle,” I’m on “You’re the Worst” this season on FXX. I also have two movies coming out this year: Killing Poe— a dark little horror comedy and Chee and T— about the last two brown guys in Silicon Valley that have nothing to do with the tech industry.
Q) We’ll be seeing you on “Castle” this season. What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) Oh man. I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve never played a cop. I get to shoot guns and be one of the good guys! So much fun and new for me!
Q) How was your character “Vikram Singh” originally described to you?
A) Vikram is a guy who should be sitting behind a desk. Circumstances have forced him to have to come out of his shell a bit. He’s operating outside of his comfort zone.
Q) Was there anything you added to the role that wasn’t originally described to you?
A) I wanted him to be a guy’s guy. Just because he’s a techie, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t go to the gym and watch the game on Sunday. I hope that comes through.
Q) The cast has worked together for eight seasons now. What was it like entering such a well established cast?
A) These guys are so nice! I love that they’ve been so warm, welcoming and inclusive. I love going to work and getting to be goofballs with them.
Q) What is different about your work on “Castle” than the other projects you have been a part of?
A) I think that with this role, I get to be part of this mystery. Who is Vikram really? Is he telling the truth always? That’s been a blast to explore.
Q) Was there someone on the show that you didn’t get to film with and wanted to or that you would have liked more scenes with?
A) I haven’t worked with Molly or Tamala [Jones] yet. We’ve hung out on set, but I can’t wait to actually get in the mix with them.
Q) What were some of your most memorable moments from filming?
A) My first week on the job had me running from bad guys machine gun fire. That’s the first time that’s happened! I want more!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I love getting to hear from castle fans directly. My first episode hasn’t even aired yet and everyone’s been so welcoming. “Castle” fandom is hardcore!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thanks for everything you guys! This run on “Castle” is a fun one! I hope you all tune in!
