Supernatural – A Most Holy Man
By: Stacy Miller
Holy Sisters of Malta Monastery. When the nuns walk away, we see a man break into a room containing relics and steal a skull. He’s caught by the Mother Superior and knocks her out. “Forgive me Mother. So sorry,” he apologizes in Maltese.
In the Men of Letters bunker kitchen, Dean (Jensen Ackles) finds Sam (Jared Padalecki) on his laptop and asks his younger brother whether Sam’s found any leads on the Seal of Solomon. Sam hasn’t gotten anything yet. Dean comments how Castiel (Misha Collins) is busy dodging bullets in Syria looking for The Tree of Life and that they’ve been unable to locate Lucifer to get his angel grace. So the last ingredient is blood of a most holy man. “What does that even mean?” Dean asks. Sam reasons that it may mean the blood of a saint. “That should be easy to get,” Dean says. Sam tells Dean that he’s found sites that deal in the sale of religious relics. “The internet, not just for porn anymore,” comments Dean. Sam adds that some of this sites deal in fakes, but he did find one dealer named Margaret Astor (Leanna Lapp) who seems to be legitimate.
The brothers head to San Francisco where they find Margaret. Sam explains that they are interested in obtaining a very rare artifact and was told she could be of help. “Who told you that?” Margaret asks. “The internet,” Dean answers. “Is that going to be a problem?” Sam asks Margaret. “Personal relationships are very important to me,” is Margaret’s reply as she caresses Sam’s hands, obviously flirting with the younger Winchester. Sam plays along and tells Margaret he would personally appreciate her help. He says that he is looking for the blood of a saint and it would mean a lot to him if she could steer him in the right direction. “I would be very much in your debt,” Sam tells Margaret. She tells Sam that the blood of a saint is very rare. But there is a man named Richard Greenstreet (Dominic Burgess) who lives in Seattle. “I’ll provide an introduction but that’s as far as I go,” Margaret tells Sam, warning him to watch out for Greenstreet, who has the trappings of a gentleman but she wouldn’t encourage an association with him. Sam and Dean go to Greenstreet’s house and once he outs their aliases, Sam tells Greenstreet that they need the blood of a most holy man for a worthy cause. But the only worthy cause Greenstreet cares about are those the line his own pocket. As the blood cost him a small fortune, Greenstreet would be willing to part with it if Sam and Dean participate in a little chicanery on his behalf. Greenstreet tells Sam and Dean that an important item that he coveted was removed from its ancestral home in Malta by a man working from the head of the Seattle mob Santino Scarpatti (Al Sapienza). The item was the skull of Saint Peter and if Sam and Dean go up against Scarpatti and retrieve the skull for Greenstreet, he’ll give them the blood of Saint Ignatius. Greenstreet tells Sam and Dean that the skull is supposed to be turned over tomorrow night, but he doesn’t know the name of the thief or where the exchange is scheduled to take place. So, Sam and Dean will need to get the skull back before it reaches Scapatti’s hands.
Sam and Dean leave Greenstreet’s residence. Sam can’t believe that this is what they’ve turned into thieves. Dean reminds that they want the blood. They get a lead on the thief whose name is Antonio Miele (Dino Dinicolo). Miele checked into The Patricia Hotel in downtown Seattle. But when they arrive at Miele’s hotel room, Sam and Dean find the man dead. Suddenly, a man named Cromarty (Fulvio Cecere) orders Sam and Dean to handcuff themselves to the radiator. It’s obvious to Sam and Dean that Cromarty is not a cop. But his gun looked real enough and he probably did call it in so Sam and Dean have to get out of the dead guy’s room quickly. In the alley, they talk about Miele being the original thief and wonder who killed him. They are cornered by two men who work for Scarpatti and tell the Winchesters that their boss wants to see them. Sam and Dean say they’ll pass, but this obviously not a request. And to make matters worse, one of the men says he’ll drive Dean’s car. Haven’t these guys ever seen an episode of Supernatural, no one but Dean (and Sam on occasion) is allowed to drive Baby!
At Scarpatti’s, the Seattle mobster says that information he learned indicates that Sam and Dean Winchester died six years ago, so if they were to turn up wacked now… Sam and Dean get Scarpatti’s point. He asks how they could work for a man like Greenstreet. Scarpatti makes Sam and Dean a counter deal: If they find his skull, he’ll give them a handsome finders’ fee and they can buy whatever they want. Sam and Dean reluctantly accept Scarpatti’s deal. And Scarpatti warns that failure isn’t an option.
Sam and Dean return to The Patricia Hotel. Sam pulls the fire alarm and goes back to the room where Miele was murdered. He finds a slip of paper with strange numbers on it. Then, a man knocks Sam over the head. Because if Sam isn’t knocked over the hand, you’re not watching Supernatural! Dean finds Sam unconscious but manages to wake him up. In the alley, Dean comments that Sam has been knocked out many times, it’s a good thing that he has that ‘Disney Princess Hair’ to protect him from worse head injury. They find the man who knocked Sam out knocked out in the alley. But the man regains consciousness.
In their hotel lobby, the man introduces himself. He is Father Lucca Camilleri (Massi Furlan). Father Camilleri explains that eight days ago, an important relic was stolen from his parish and the nuns asked him to get it back. Father Camilleri brought money in the hope of buying the skull back from the thief. But then he found the thief dead and Sam later in the man’s room; he (Father Camilleri) panicked and knocked Sam out. Father Camilleri explains how much the skull of Saint Peter means to him and everyone who has prayed to Saint Peter over the years. Father Camilleri’s words move Sam so much that he considers finding the skull and giving it back to Father Camilleri. Dean asks Sam are they willing to cross Scarpatti and Greenstreet. Sam says that Father Lucca Camilleri is a good guy who has done charity work, while Scarpatti and Greenstreet are the bad guys. Sam understands why Father Camilleri knocked him out and asks what Dean would do if someone stole the Impala. “I’d murder them,” Dean answers. Sam says that Father Camilleri feels just as strongly about the skull of Saint Peter.
In the Impala, Sam, Dean and Father Camilleri are on their way to the location of where the skull is; apparently the slip of paper that Camilleri stole from Sam is a tracking number.
At the warehouse, we learn that Margaret Astor killed Miele so she could get the skull to sell to Scarpatti. The Seattle mobster is furious as he knows that Margaret won’t honor Miele’s price. Sam arrives at the warehouse and shows a briefcase full of the church’s money (that Father Camilleri) gave him. He tells Greenstreet, Margaret and Scarpatti that he’s there to buy. Margaret decides to make the transaction simple: They all will think of their best price then write it down on a piece of paper and the person with the highest buys the skull. When the offers are made, it looks like Greenstreet’s bid is ‘0.’ Margaret asks whether this is a joke to him. No, Greenstreet replies. He intends to buy the skull but not from her. If Scarpatti kills Margaret, he’ll pay him a million for the skull right now. While Margaret is talking about how she’s been doing business with Scarpatti for years and he’d never to that, the fake cop Cromarty shoots Margaret in the back, killing her. Soon, everyone in the warehouse exchange gunfire. Dean and Camilleri arrive and the Father is hit. Fortunately he is only grazed. Cromarty and Scarpatti are killed. And Greenstreet confesses that the blood doesn’t exist, he was just participating in chicanery. This earns him a punch from Dean. Greenstreet is later arrested. And Sam and Dean learn that Father Camilleri met the Pope, who praised Father Camilleri for his good works and called him (Father Camilleri) a Most Holy Man. “We’re going to need one more thing from you,” Dean tells Father Camilleri.
Sam and Dean return to the Men of Letters bunker. “One down, three more to go,” Dean says, holding a vial of Father Camilleri’s blood. Sam wonders how much good they actual do when they kill one monster and there’s another waiting in the wings. He also wonders if the rift spell will work. “I have faith,” the once faithless Dean says.
