With the season winding down for “Supernatural,” the episode Don’t Call Me Shurley heightened the danger of Amara for Sam and Dean. It also brought back a beloved character with ties to Sam and Dean’s past story and with a stake in their future one.

How the Mighty scribes of God have fallen! Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) is digging in a dumpster for food, which he does share with the mangy dog nearby. Suddenly, Metatron and the dog are in a bar. A man in a booth calls him over. It is Chuck Shurley (Rob Benedict). Metatron criticizes the bar, a replica of one of God’s favorite hangouts. He calls Chuck a hack writer and says Supernatural didn’t make the best seller list of all the books he’s read. Chuck can’t believe Metatron didn’t like Home or All Hell Breaks Loose. He then gives Metatron some sunglasses and a bright light appears. He is God and he is back!

Metatron immediately apologizes for everything he said about Supernatural and the bar saying, “It’s like Cheers, everyone knows my name.” He asks God where he’s been. “Call me Chuck.” And for the sake of this recap, I will abide by God, I mean Chuck’s wishes. Chuck explains he took human form because he wanted to hide in plain sight. He tells Metatron he’s been traveling, has a blog with cat pictures and is even on Snapchat. God is definitely up with the times. He’s also had some relationships with women and men because he’s God and God loves all his creations. Metatron asks why he couldn’t be tracked with the God EMF (a/k/a the amulet or the Samulet) and Chuck tells Metatron he turned the amulet off whenever Castiel around. “You have any idea where this thing has been?” Chuck says amusingly. Where?! Do tell! But of course he doesn’t say because God is a tease! Metatron tells Chuck that his sister Amara (Emily Swallow) is out and causing havoc. Chuck doesn’t want to hear about his sister. “This is not her story,” he adds coldly.

At the Men of Letters bunker, Dean (Jensen Ackles) is ironing when Sam (Jared Padalecki) enters and tells him about bizarre murder/suicides in Hope Springs, Idaho that could be a case. Dean finishes his ironing so they can check it out. Sam is annoyed even though Dean was ironing Sam’s shirts for him. Why? Because of Dean’s choice of spray starch: “Don’t iron my clothes with beer!” Too funny! I should try that with my sibling.

Chuck thinks music and nacho cheese are the world’s greatest creations. He also tells Metatron he is writing his autobiography and wants Metatron to be his Beta Reader.

Sam and Dean arrive in Hope Spring and learn more about the violence. Later, Deputy Jan Harris (Sonja Bennett) kills her husband and then sees a strange fog.

Metatron reads some of the manuscript and tells Chuck his autobiography doesn’t have soul, which is surprising because he created souls. “In the beginning there was me. I’m hooked,” Chuck says. He reveals that he was lonely and his ordinary sister wasn’t enough to give him company. Chuck takes Metatron to a National Park. He talks about how people have destroyed the Earth and always want him to fix their messes. “I’ve put Castiel back together more time than I can count and look how that turned out,” Chuck says. Metatron asks whether he’s going to help Sam and Dean with Amara. “I love those guys. The world could have survived with Demon Dean, but Sam couldn’t have that.” Chuck says maybe it’s Amara’s time to shine. Metatron calls him a coward for hiding out in the scrawny human. Metatron calls Chuck a coward, which earns him God’s wrath and Chuck tells him he only chose him to write his memoirs because he was the closest Angel to the door as he was leaving. Metatron tells Chuck he only tried to be God because he abandoned him.

Meanwhile in Hope Springs, Deputy Jan Harris returns to town and Sam and Dean sees the black veins on her body. She delivers a message to Dean from Amara before she’s shot. Sam notices the fog and they take cover inside the Sheriff’s Department. Unfortunately, not all the townspeople make it inside. Sam and Dean begin duct taping the door and window cracks, basically any place where the fog can seep inside. But some of the duct tape becomes unstuck and Sam becomes infected by the black vein virus!

Why is Sam always the Winchester brother who’s hurt? Because he’s the little brother and “Supernatural” loves milking the helpless Sammy so we can get some tearjerker scenes involving Dean not leaving his brother. The brother relationship is “Supernatural’s” most powerful asset so the show is always going to cash in on it. Anyway, Dean has everyone else lock themselves in the other room while he remains behind to help Sam.

Showing that he thinks music is one of the world’s greatest inventions, Chuck plays the guitar and sings for Metatron.

Back in Hope Springs, when it looks like Sam will succumb to the black vein virus, a bright light appears in Dean’s pocket. Dean pulls out the amulet and Sam is healed. In fact, everyone who died as a result of the infection are healed. Jan Harris reunites with her dead husband. Dean is holding the amulet which leads them to Chuck. Obviously, he turned back on the amulet tracker. “We should probably talk,” Chuck says.

Oh my God! Literally. This was a brilliant episode! I can’t wait to see what Chuck – er God – says to Sam and Dean next week!
