Interviews
Sydney Rhame – Lose Myself
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would say I ultimately make pop music, but with different combinations of singer-songwriter and R&B. I grew up in Atlanta, so I have a huge appreciation for hip hop/R&B, but I also mostly play guitar so I combine what I know to create music people can relate to – pop.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I grew up listening to all different types of music. My parents always had music playing in the house, so I was able to appreciate a lot of different styles and genres. I would say some of my influences are John Mayer, Michael Jackson, Pink, Prince, Rob Thomas, Madonna and many more. I think it’s super important to know and appreciate all different types of music.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Lose Myself.” What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) “Lose Myself” is a song about not wanting to lose your identity in a relationship (or any situation) and holding onto a sense of self when that may be difficult. I think people can connect to the message because we are all met with times where we may lose who we are and need to reconnect with ourselves to move forward.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My writing process is never the same. Sometimes I’ll find some cool chords I like and then base a melody off that. Other times, I’ll just be in the shower or out running errands and a melody comes to me that I’ll record into my voice memos in my phone. That’s what’s exciting about writing songs, it’s always kind of a surprise.
Q) How much hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’ve had the privilege of working with some amazing producers who really understand my sound when I play for them just with my guitar, so I typically try to stay out of the way when it comes to production in order to let the producer vibe with the song and create. That being said, I usually have a general idea for production when I write it and will voice that too. I definitely would love to get more into the production side of things for sure though.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Sydney Rhame performance?
A) I’ve been playing live since I was eight years old and I absolutely love it. I think I mostly love connecting with people through music – that’s why I make music in the first place. As far as my live shows go, people can expect a lot of things such as stories from my life, music that makes you want to move, and genuine connection with people.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) I’m so excited to say there will be an EP on its way soon!
Q) We loved seeing you on “The Voice!” Have you kept in touch with former coach Pharrell?
A) Thank you! And I wish I still had contact with Pharrell! [laughs] Probably a good thing I don’t have his number or anything. I’d probably just blow up his phone.
Q) What was one piece of advice he offered while on the show that you took to heart?
A) He told me I need to be more confident in my abilities, which I really appreciated. He said I needed to believe that what I had was special and ever since I’ve tried to exude confidence when it comes to my music because it’s something I believe in.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are so many collabs I would love to do! I think it’d be really cool to do a song with Khalid because his sound is really awesome.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Right now, I’m really into Travis Scott’s new album. Living in Atlanta, I’ve really learned to appreciate hip hop/R&B and Travis’ new album is just super catchy.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I love connecting to my followers through social media because I’m able to reach people all over the world and really communicate with them. I do music for the connection with others and social media gives me an amazing way to do that.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much for believing in me and supporting what I do. It can be really hard to pursue something creative because there’s no clear-cut way to do it, so it’s easy to lose sight. But because I have people supporting me, I feel like I can do absolutely anything.
