Ted Lasso – Goodbye Earl
By: Alejandra Gil M
The episode starts with AFC Richmond and Notthingham Forest tied with two goals each, there´s a penalty for the local team and a chance to end seven straight draws since the season started, everyone´s cheering. Nathan (Nick Mohammed) asks if he´s okay to pray, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) encourages him, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) thinks is better to cross fingers and make a wish. Dani (Cristo Fernandez) prepares to take on the penalty, but tragedy hits when he kicks the ball and the team´s dog Earl jumps in it´s way chasing a bird, instantly killing him. Rebecca´s (Hannah Waddington) walking with Higgins (Jeremy Swift) to the press conference room to deal with the aftermath. Keeley (Juno Temple) confirms that twitter is going bonkers. Ted comes across a difficult question by Trent Crimm (James Lance) from the Independent but Ted handles in the most Ted Lasso way possible with a story from his childhood.
Dani´s very affected by what happened, he´s been standing in the shower for twenty minutes praying. While in Rebecca´s office, Higgins telling her and Keeley that they just received a giant food delivery from rival Brentford FC, Keeley asks what kind and he says Thai so they´re just messing with them. Ted walks in and takes a drink with them, they toast to Earl. Rebecca gets a text from someone we meet later in the episode but she and Keeley are in their own world, Ted doesn´t know what´s going on and tries to get in on it, turns out is a gentleman she´s been out on a couple times with. She asks Keeley if Roy´s (Brett Goldstein) free for a double date on the weekend. That´s who we see next, Roy´s been on a coaching gig for a kids tournament where his niece Phoebe (Elodie Blomfield) is playing, Keeley takes them for hot chocolate so she tells him about Rebecca´s double date, he can´t say no. The season´s almost over so Roy will have more free time, he has been hanging out with a yoga mom group. Keeley tells him that Sky Sports reached out again about a pundit position, but he´s not interested at all and makes it very clear.
Ted comes in Rebecca´s office but she´s disappointed, hoping it was Keeley but he insists she can try the girl talk with him, she describes John (Patrick Baladi) and sounds great, they keep the conversation going which makes Ted late for practice, and there´s a situation with Dani, he´s not handling it Earl´s death well, keeps missing penalties, Coach Beard writes on a board the word “The Yipes,” which is what they think Dani´s going through. Higgins suggests to bring in the team´s psychologist. Ted´s having second thoughts about it and doesn´t support very much bringing someone from the outside to help Dani. Ted says that is because the only time he went to a therapist he got a divorce, so Coach Beard reminds him of something he once said: “all people are different people.”
Rebecca´s double date with Roy and Keeley is going, seems a little uncomfortable for everyone, especially when John asks Roy how retirement´s going, so they go outside and say good night. She asks Keeley and Roy what they think and to my surprise he has the perfect response: she deserves someone that makes her feel like she´s been struck by lightning and shouldn´t settle for less, not that is any of his business as he adds.
Doctor Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) is introduced by Higgins and immediately butts head with Ted, it seems like there´s some friction there. Dani´s the first to go to her office previously Higgins. So, Rebecca breaks up with John by the end of the episode and Dani seems to be doing a lot better now at practice, so a few more of the team players go see her. Last scene has Roy with his yoga mom´s club, they sit down to watch a dating reality show called Lust Conquers All and we see one of the members is a familiar face, Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster).
