Tedy – Boys Don’t Cry
By: Robert Warren
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) A bit of everything and constantly evolving. I feel like there are RnB, Pop and Rock elements…everything! I like keeping my sound free. I do what I feel.
Q) Talk about the story behind your recent single “Boys Don’t Cry.”
A) I just wanted a way to start forcing myself to open up more about my feelings – a way to discuss my past and how it affects my present. I was looking to become a more independent, stronger, self-loving and self-reliant person.
Q) The first single off of Boys Don’t Cry was “Stuck,” which was co-produced by Mike Wise (Bulow, Ellie Goulding, Chainsmokers, Upshal) and Herag Sanbalian. What was it like getting to work with them and how did their input on this particular track influence the feel of the song?
A) It was honestly an insane experience! Both their talents are undeniable! The fact that I got to create with them is something I definitely don’t take for granted. I loved that I could throw absolutely anything at them and they would find a way to bring what I was thinking to life! That ability is what helped “Stuck” come together in such an authentic way.
Q) Your second single “War” is so powerful and heart-wrenching. What was your process in writing that song?
A) The process was just me and Herag [Sanbalian] in a room together vibing. “War” just naturally came about. Within about an hour the song was pretty much written. He was playing the guitar and suddenly it felt like the feelings I had been suppressing were jumping out of me! [laughs]
Q) For “War” you also performed a stripped-down version for the music video. How did you come up with the concept for it?
A) Well, I wanted to showcase being stuck with yourself and your thoughts and the inner struggles that I and many others feel about loving themselves. Also, figuring out that things may not be perfect and you may be hurting but you still have to focus on the things you want and need to achieve! Still have to move forward!
Q) Your upcoming EP Boys Don’t Cry is set to release in the fall. Aside from the three released singles “Stuck,” “War” and “Boys Don’t Cry,” what do you hope your fans will take away from the new EP?
A) That emotions do not make you weak. That the ups and downs are just a part of life. Just because things aren’t perfect it doesn’t mean you have to stop living!
Q) Which song is the most personal to you on Boys Don’t Cry?
A) “Boys Don’t Cry” for sure and “Hopeless.” I feel like I open up a lot on these songs in a way I haven’t before. I really dug deep and explored my mind to find the root of my issues and hid nothing.
Q) You have talked about how you create music through your own personal experiences, as a form of therapy. Why do you believe music is such a great form of release?
A) You have to be vulnerable. I don’t think music works for anyone unless you let go and just feel and make people feel whatever emotion you are trying to convey. That vulnerability almost becomes your armor. So, it is freeing to just spill your guts to the world.
Q) Your social media following is quite extensive, with over 800k followers on Tik Tok & YouTube alone. As an artist, what do you think is the value of utilizing several social media outlets to share your music and which platform has yielded the greatest response for you so far?
A) I would say what matters isn’t the platform. It’s the people. You want to build connections. You want people to believe in you and what you do. Then, they will just naturally share and support everything you do! Spotify is definitely a game changer! YouTube music curators change lives. I owe everything to them!
Q) If you collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?
A) Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Troy Sivan, Lauv, Taylor Swift! Sam Smith, Adele…[laughs] In my wildest dreams! Crazy things like that would happen.
Q) Who were some of your musical influences growing up?
A) Rihanna, Adele, Taylor Swift!!! Drake! So, so, so many more! I love anyone that makes me feel something!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone that is a fan and supporter of your work?
A) Go for what you want! Strive for greatness. Your world doesn’t have to be perfect! You don’t have to be perfect. Be you and give ‘em hell. Period.
