Teenage Joans – My Heart’s Dead

By: Lisa Steinberg

Q) Your music has been described as pop-punk/rock, but how do you describe your sound?

A) We definitely lean all over the place – punk-pop is the easiest way to explain it, but we have some heavier tracks, some rock opera influence, even major pop influence.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) 5sos, Paramore, Yungblud, Mom Jeans, Hot Mulligan, My Chemical Romance.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “My Heart’s Dead.”The single came out here at the start of August. What have fans been saying about how they connect to it?

A) We wrote it based off a cover we were doing of Kesha’s “Die Young.” We basically stripped the vocals off of our version and rewrote new lyrics and melodies and that’s how My Heart’s Dead! came along!

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) At the moment we’re an independent band, so the music video was homemade, complete DIY. Our projects usually have a lot of DIY anyway, so we thought why not take the extra step to show the true Teenage Joans and go back to making a whole release ourselves.

Q) What is your song writing process?

A) We usually bring ideas to each other and then sit down together and flesh out the song. Nothing fancy, just us two in a bedroom.

Q) Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Both things come quite naturally to us; it’s more about the energy of the moment and being together which creates the spark for the song.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) Loads! The majority of the production is led by us. We are lucky enough to have a great relationship with our producer where he can translate our crazy ideas into what it ends up sounding like.

Q) With “My Heart’s Dead” out, is this a prelude to a full album or EP?

A) It’s a moment in time right now, not part of anything bigger, but we are working on a second album currently.

Q) You’ve toured with the likes of Sum 41 and Foo Fighters and played on some major stages! Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) We toured the US last year twice and found we really resonated with the energy over there – they just seem to genuinely love live music and are really interested in what we do.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) A dream would be a member from 5sos or even the whole band. Otherwise, Hayley Williams or Yungblud would be sick!

Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Ethel Cain, Conan Gray, Yungblud and Hayley Williams have all released some super raw and real projects lately. We just really love and resonate with true authenticity in artists.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Thank you so much for the love and the patience in between our releases! We’re taking our time with our next project as we want it to be as authentic and true as possible so that you get to see the best version of us. We don’t keep up with the speed release timelines as we feel it’s not authentic to us, so to those who are patiently waiting, thank you!
