Terrell Ransom, Jr. – The Amazing World of Gumball
By: Kelly Kearney
Terrell Ransom Jr plays the hilarious Darwin, a fish with legs, in “The Amazing World of Gumball” on Cartoon Network. Terrell was nice enough to take the time to talk with us about Gumball and what it’s like being a young voice over star on such a popular kid’s show.
Q) Do you have any upcoming projects that you’d like to talk about?
Terrell: I do have a few, but I cannot talk about them so much. But you just need to watch and look out for Terrell.
Q) How was your character Darwin on “The Amazing World of Gumball” originally described to you?
Terrell: Darwin is a loveable and loving character. He can kind of be the one character who’s right most of the time. He’s like the mom or dad of the group, helping everybody out when they need it. I actually watched the show before I recorded for it. I loved it so much. So, when I got the role it was really interesting. It’s such a crazy show that I am a fish with legs that sleeps in a fish bowl. It’s really, really an interesting and fun show to work on.
Q) Speaking of that fishbowl, do you think Darwin is ready for a bigger fishbowl? It seems kind of cramped in there.
Terrell: Oh yes, definitely. He needs a large aquarium that he can stretch out in. A bigger one for his big heart.
Q) You mentioned before how the show is very funny. Is it hard to get through your lines without laughing?
Terrell: It really is. What happens is, I sort of play off someone else recording for it [Darwin ]. Usually, it’s this big burly man with a deep voice and I’m always reading the script while he’s talking. So, it’s fun to hear a really funny line that’s supposed to be Darwin, but in that voice. I’m usually laughing the entire time.
Q) What episode has been your favorite to work on?
Terrell: My favorite episode has to be Origins Part 1 and 2. I think it was really cool to see how Darwin got his legs and to see how he ended up with Gumball. I think that’s such an awesome episode.
Q) What’s the best part of playing Darwin?
Terrell: I was a really huge fan of Darwin. He was my favorite character before I even took over the role. So, he’s always been an awesome character for me. I also think that it’s awesome to be someone who’s so loved and to be a part of such a great show is just really, really cool.
Q) It was mentioned in The New York Times that “The Amazing World of Gumball,” might be made into a movie. When can the fans expect to see it in theaters?
Terrell: Well, that’s not confirmed yet but it’s in the works!
Q) You are part of social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive to episodes of “Gumball?”
Terrell: I do. I like to see how other people respond to the show besides me and my parents. I love hearing everybody’s feedback.
Q) You played Theo Carver on “Days of Our Lives.” Which do you like better? Onscreen acting like you did on “Days,” or the voice over work you’re doing now? How different are two?
Terrell: I really love both, but they’re different. They both have different advantages. Like you can go to do a voice over in your pajamas and you don’t really have to memorize any lines. With onscreen acting you have more of a connection to your character.
Q) You have a YouTube channel called “Terrell’s World.” Can you tell the fans what that’s about?
Terrell: “Terrell’s World” is a non-scripted comedy channel that I have. It’s sort of a look into my life with skits. I dress up as my Mom, my Grandma and Dad and stuff like that. I sort of act out my life and its really cool.
Q) Is acting something you’ve always wanted to do or do you see yourself doing something else as you get older?
Terrell: Acting has always been something I’ve wanted to do since I was three years old. I’ve always seen myself as a performer. When I’m older I see myself acting, singing and dancing – kind of like a triple threat.
Q) Besides “Gumball,” what was or is your favorite animated show?
Terrell: I’d say “Tom and Jerry.” It’s a classic.
Q) When you’re not lending your voice to the character Darwin, what do you do for fun in your downtime?
Terrell: I record videos for “Terrell’s World.” I’m a huge gamer and I love playing video games. I love going to Six Flags because me and my dad are huge rollercoaster buffs. I was playing Pokémon Go, but ya know (laughing) I was a bit too lazy for the walking thing. It was a bit of a challenge for me.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who’s a fan and supporter of you and your work?
Terrell: I really appreciate you guys being such big fans of me and the show. I work hard and I thank you so, so much for the support.
