The Big Bang Theory – The Proposal Proposal
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
Our favorite group of awkward, loveable scientists are back for a new season and the answer to the cliffhanger at the end of last season: will Amy (Mayim Bialik) say yes to Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) impromptu proposal? And the episode begins right where that proposal left off, with Amy in shock and Sheldon awaiting an answer. Their moment is broken by the ringing of Sheldon’s phone and a concerned Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) inquiring about Sheldon’s whereabouts.
While Amy is perplexed at the reasoning behind Sheldon answering his phone, she hears him explain how Dr. Ramona Nowitzki (Riki Lindhome) kissing him made him realize that Amy was the only woman he wanted to be with. And with the blessing of Stephen Hawking and Amy’s father, Sheldon was now only waiting to receive Amy’s answer. But since Leonard and Penny interrupted the moment Sheldon has not been able to get an answer. Both parties hang up the phone and shortly after Leonard gets another call from Sheldon. This time he learns that Amy has accepted the proposal!
In excitement to tell everyone Sheldon calls his mother Mary (Laurie Metcalf) and relays the story, then Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and finally Howard (Simon Helberg), always remembering to add the part of Dr. Nowitzki kissing him. Each party is excited about the news, but it isn’t until Howard goes to share the news with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) that the proposal goes on the backburner. As Howard shares the news through the bathroom door to Bernadette we see her holding a positive pregnancy test. Yes, another baby Wolowitz is on the way.
Later at the Hofstadter residence Bernadette shares this news with Penny, who is just as perplexed as she is to Bernadette is pregnant again. At first Penny assures her she is a good mother and that she needs to talk to Howard, both are confused as to how a second pregnancy could have happened so quickly as Bernadette had been careful in trying not to get pregnant. When Bernadette finally gets to speak with Howard about the new Wolowitz on the way, his reaction is funnier than Bernadette’s reaction so much that he starts to cry and freak out. Eventually, both Bernadette and Howard accept the idea of a second baby after talking with Leonard and Penny, but not without attempting to convince the Hofstadters to have a baby of their own so they can go through the process together.
Meanwhile at the university Raj, Leonard and Howard manage to spot Dr. Nowitzki in the cafeteria eating lunch. Raj takes it upon himself to break the news of the engagement to Ramona in an effort to rub in her face that Sheldon didn’t choose her. Unfortunately, the effort turns sour after Raj then offers himself up for dating and is rebuffed yet again. This just reminds Raj that he is alone and it is difficult to be around happy people because all of his friends are moving forward in their romantic lives. Even speaking later that day with Stuart (Kevin Sussman) at the comic book store goes sour as Stuart casually mentions he has a date that night.
After the talk with Howard and Bernadette, Leonard surprises Penny with a chocolate cake as she walks in the door of their apartment. While she questions the reasoning behind the cake Leonard just wants to give her something for all the happy news that surrounds them and their friends. As she goes to eat the cake, it is then Leonard remembers it is their wedding anniversary. Penny smiles at him with a face full of cake and tells him “Happy Anniversary.”
Back at Princeton Shamy (Sheldon and Amy) are in their state of engagement bliss. Convincing Sheldon to stay a few days with promises of clothing and comic books, Amy invites him to join her that night to meet up with a couple of her work colleagues, Dr. Zane (George Wyner) and Dr. Harris (Susan Chuang). While Amy explains how Sheldon is a physicist back home, both doctors are more interested in talking up Amy and the amazing work she is doing. Sheldon takes offense and becomes a little green with envy, trying to continually steer the conversation back to his accomplishments with little luck.
The disastrous night prompts the first Shamy fight as an engaged couple, with Amy pointing out how Sheldon doesn’t give her enough credit for her work and it is her time to shine for once. Amy storms off into the bedroom while Sheldon locks himself in the bathroom and seeks guidance from Stephen Hawking via laptop. After their talk Sheldon goes in the living room and finds Amy. Using the analogy of The Avengers and how Iron Man played a background role and in a Captain America film, Sheldon apologizes knowing that Amy is brilliant this is her time to shine. In the future he will work towards sharing the spotlight with Amy. They make up.
Fast forward three months later and Sheldon is back at the university with Amy. Raj, Howard and Leonard are all so happy to see her back in California. While they guys are oogling over the engagement ring, Amy spots Dr. Ramona Nowitzki in the cafeteria and decides to approach her. Whereas Ramona was standoffish with the guys as they approached, she appears a little scared to be face-to-face with Amy again. But instead of anger Amy thanks her for everything.
With Amy saying yes we can only assume wedding plans are going to be underway for Shamy! And with a new Wolowitz on the way, how will Howard and Bernadette cope with more change? Join me next week for an all-new episode of The Big Bang Theory.
