The Carmichael Show – Three Year Anniversary
By: Jessica Wolff
At a bar, Jerrod Carmichael (Jerrod Carmichael) talks about Maxine’s (Amber Stevens West) dislike of weddings while Jessica (Tawny Newsome) sits with them. As Jessica goes to get them more drinks, Jerrod tells Maxine that Jessica wants to have sex with them. Maxine denies it, but Jerrod lists all of the signs of flirtation. She argues that she’s just being friendly, but Jerrod responds that friendliness is flirting in disguise. Maxine admits that she’s flattered by the idea, and Jerrod asks what they’re going to do about it.
He reminds her that she’s previously stated that she’s open to a threesome and tells her that it’s a sign that the opportunity presented itself on their three-year anniversary. She admits that it’s a fantasy of hers, and they agree to go through with it. Jessica comes back and Maxine tells Jerrod not to make things weird. She compliments Maxine’s eyes, and Jerrod tells Jessica that they think her eyes are beautiful too. Jessica kisses Maxine, and Jerrod grins. She then kisses Jerrod and he asks her if she wants to watch Westworld.
The next morning, Maxine wishes Jerrod a happy anniversary as she serves them coffee. She comments that the previous night was amazing, and Jerrod agrees. He believes that every couple should have a threesome and that he’s never felt more in sync with her. Jerrod declares that he’s proud of the work he did in there, and Maxine believes that they can accomplish anything together. He tells her that she officially became the most important person in the world to him after last night and they kiss on the couch.
Jessica talks on the phone from the bedroom, and Jerrod asks why she’s still there. Maxine comments that it’s almost noon and asks how long you’re supposed to stay after a threesome. Jerrod says that the rules of a one-night stand say that you have to leave in the morning like a vampire. Jessica comes out of the bedroom, and Maxine tells her that it was a fun night. To their surprise, Jessica kisses both of them again and asks them if they have a third toothbrush. Maxine tells her that there’s one under the sink, and Jessica tells them that they can watch Westworld when she’s done.
Maxine asks how long she’s going to stay there, and Jerrod comments that she’s going to die here since she’s brushing her teeth while wearing his shirt. She decides that she will tell Jessica that they have to pick up her sister from her abusive boyfriend’s house. Jerrod tells her that she will want to come with them, and Maxine asks who would want to go to that. He tells her everyone would, because it sounds interesting. Jerrod tells her that he will just tell Jessica to get out, but Maxine tells him that they should come up with a way to get her to leave without hurting her. She suggests telling her that they already have plans.
Jessica comes out and helps herself to a cup of coffee, and Maxine tells her that she and Jerrod have appointments for a couples massage. She asks what spa, and Jerrod steps in and tells her that they intended this as a one-night stand and that she should leave. Maxine apologizes for Jerrod’s bluntness, and tells her that they had an amazing time last night and she doesn’t have to leave. Jerrod tells her that she’s just saying that to be nice, and that they really want her to leave. Jessica apologizes for overstaying her welcome, and Jerrod tells her that she doesn’t need to be sorry and that they are new to threesomes. He opens the door, and she announces that she’ll leave.
Once she’s gone, Jerrod declares that it’s time for Westworld. Maxine tells him that he was inconsiderate and hurt Jessica’s feelings. She asks how he would feel if someone kicked him out the morning after, and he replies that it would be amazing. Jerrod comments that honesty is better than stringing someone along and that she can now enjoy her day. Maxine tells him that he didn’t do anything noble, and that people don’t like brutal honesty. Jerrod tells her that they shouldn’t fight over this. Maxine tells him that he threw Jessica out like trash, and Jerrod responds that he recycled her.
There is a knock at the door, and Maxine tells him not to answer the door since she can’t deal with his family right now. Bobby Carmichael (LilRel Howery) asks if they’re home, and Cynthia Carmichael (Loretta Devine) tells him they have to be because they don’t go anywhere else other then their home since they have no lives. Joe Carmichael (David Alan Grier) calls them rude and threatens to kick down the door. Jerrod answers the door and Cynthia wishes him a happy anniversary. Joe remarks that it must have been a wild night since they are still in their bathrobes. Cynthia tells them that the real anniversary comes when they’re married, and hopes that they can get right with god soon.
Bobby gives them a gift of Egyptian cotton towels. Maxine announces that she will be in the bedroom and they will finish their discussion later. Joe stops her and comments that they walked in on an anniversary fight, and tells them that Jerrod was conceived after an anniversary fight. Jerrod answers the door and Jessica comes back, causing Joe to ask who she is. She tells Jerrod that she left her bra and that she will leave as soon as he gives it to her. Cynthia asks if she said bra, and Bobby confirms it. Jerrod goes to get it, and Maxine says hi to Jessica. The mood is tense, and Joe asks if they had a sleepover. Jessica says that it was something like that, and Cynthia assumes that she’s from out of state.
Jerrod comes back and hands Jessica a bra, but she says that it’s not hers. Maxine identifies it as hers and Maxine goes to find Jessica’s. Cynthia asks Jessica if they went to school together, and she says no. Joe comments that Jerrod has a shirt like Jessica’s, and Maxine comes out with Jessica’s bra. Jessica thanks her and runs out of the apartment. Bobby announces that they need to figure out what happened, and Cynthia replies that she’s never lost a bra anywhere. Jerrod tells them to stop trying to figure it out, but Bobby puts the pieces together and figures that they had a threesome.
Cynthia is horrified by the revelation, but Jerrod tells them not to make a big deal out of it. Joe admits that he’s conflicted since he’s proud of Jerrod and disappointed in Maxine. He then remarks that the double standard between men and women is real. Maxine asks if they can drop this, and Bobby accuses Jerrod of stealing his thunder. He tells them that he was about to announce that he finally had sex with an Asian girl, but Jerrod has to have all of the accomplishments. Cynthia can’t believe that her son is engaged to a lesbian, and Maxine tells her that this doesn’t make her a lesbian. Joe asks if she’s sure, since she can realize that she’s a lesbian later in life.
Cynthia asks Maxine if she did this to prove how open-minded she is, and tells her to pick an identity and stick with it. Maxine asks Jerrod for back up, but he tells her that he can’t control what they say. Bobby asks since they had a threesome on their three-year anniversary if it’s going to be four on their fourth anniversary and onwards. Frustrated, Maxine tells all of them to get out of the apartment. Everyone, including Jerrod, is offended and Cynthia tells her that she liked her better when she was straight. Bobby tells them that he’s taking the towels back, and Joe congratulates Jerrod before calling Maxine shameful.
After they leave, Jerrod tells her that she can’t throw her family out. Maxine calls him out for not standing up for her, and goes to the bedroom. Jerrod follows her and Maxine tells him that she wants him to rescue her sometimes. She reminds him that he said nothing when his parents implied that she was a whore. She compliments him, and then tells him that he’s bad with feelings. Maxine wishes that he would acknowledge her feelings and he tells her that he’s a bad boyfriend. He tells her that it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love her, and she tells him that he’s not going to get out of this by trying to lower her expectations. She asks why she would stay in a relationship like that, and he admits that he’s scared that she won’t stay with him.
Maxine asks why he thinks she would break up with him, and he reminds her that he is a bad boyfriend. She points out that he wouldn’t need to be worried if he were a better boyfriend. Maxine tells him that’s he’s compassionate when he wants to be, and Jerrod tells her that he’s not. She reminds him that they were so in sync last night, and he tells her that a threesome is a fragile situation that needs attentiveness. She asks him to be that guy all of the time, and he confirms that she wants him to live every day like they’re in the middle of a threesome. Maxine tells him yes if that’s the only way he can care about her feelings. Jerrod asks if she means that the relationship isn’t only about him and that he should be sensitive to her needs, and she tells him that is what she means. Jerrod asks her to come to his parent’s house, and admits that he should have stood up for him earlier. Declaring that he wants to show his parents “threesome Jerrod,” he asks her to wear something nice for a stop they have to make beforehand.
Jerrod and Maxine arrive at the house, and Jerrod calls out his family for insulting Maxine. He tells them that Maxine has feelings, and that they are connected to his and that he loves her. Jerrod reminds them that she gave him a threesome, and that means everything to him. Cynthia tells them to stop bringing it up, and Joe admits that he went too far in insulting Maxine. She forgives him, and Jerrod tells them that he and Maxine just got married at the courthouse. Cynthia is horrified that they got married without a wedding, and Jerrod demands that Bobby give back their towels. Maxine calls Joe and Cynthia dad and mom, but Cynthia is not happy. Joe asks if they really got married, and Maxine tells them that she is now Maxine North-Carmichael. Cynthia is not happy about the hyphenated name and says that even her name is a threesome. Joe declares that he’s happy for them, embraces them, and welcomes Maxine to the family. Joe asks Cynthia to join them, but she doesn’t want them to try and have sex with them too. Bobby remarks that their wedding night won’t be as exciting as their threesome.
While watching TV, Bobby asks Jerrod is a threesome lasts twice as long or half as long. Jerrod tells him that he’s not giving him details, since this is his wife they’re talking about. After Bobby continues questioning him, Jerrod admits that they did everything Bobby thinks they did. Bobby tells Jerrod that he hates him, and then admits that he’s resentful. He asks if it’s weird that he can’t stop picturing Jerrod having sex, and Jerrod tells him that it is. Bobby asks if it’s weird that he doesn’t want to stop imagining it, and Jerrod tells him to leave. He leaves, but tells Jerrod that he’s selfish for not imagining Bobby having sex with the Asian girl.
