The Flash – Legacy
By: Malasha Parker
We hear Nora’s (Jessica Parker Kennedy) voice as we go in slow motion right when Barry (Grant Gustin) shot the mirror gun towards the dagger. She explains how she always wanted to be a hero and use her extraordinary abilities to help people. She wanted to help fix The Flash’s legacy and save him, but she never imagined it would turn out this way. The Flash shoots the gun as Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer) runs in between the dagger and the blast. The dagger stretches into his back and pops out as he gets hit with the mirror gun blast. His body begins to transform and he’s stuck in a clustered state. He says, “Cicada. Thawne. Dagger.” Cicada 2.0 (Sarah Carter) summons the dagger and flies off.
Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) tells the team that Ralph’s cells are kinetically inverted. Nora says she doesn’t understand why Ralph would run in front of the dagger. Barry believes they should get down to CCPD to see if they can track anything, so they head that way. Cisco (Carlos Valdes) gets a text and seems stressed, so Caitlin asks him what it is. He says he’s supposed to meet up with Kamilla (Victoria Park). Though things are going well, he still hasn’t told her that he’s a metahuman. Caitlin says that if he’s serious about being with Kamilla then he has to tell her the truth.
Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) is speaking to Captain Singh (Patrick Sabongui) about how all the metas they couldn’t cure are safe and at a secured holding facility. He’s happy about that, but Joe (Jesse L. Martin) mentions how Cicada 2.0 is still out there. Barry says he’s ready for the nightmare to end and Nora believes it should have been over already. Barry tells her that Cisco is working on it and they’ll figure something out soon. Barry notices something on the ground. He picks up a piece of wood that he thinks Cicada 2.0 brought in herself.
Future Grace asks what they should do now and Orlin (Chris Klein) tells her to hit them when they least expect it. Grace looks over to the cure and says that she can use it to repair the timesphere to bring the last of the virus back to the night of the particle accelerator. Orlin tells her to destroy the metahumans before they destroy the world.
Cisco says it’s definitely a wood frame piece. Iris (Candice Patton) asks if he thinks it’ll lead them to Cicada’s hideout and he says they’ll find out. He starts searching as the others check on an unconscious Ralph. Caitlin still can’t figure out how to reverse his cells. Nora starts to say they still don’t know why he jumped in front of the mirror gun, but Sherloque (Tom Cavanagh) says they do,while holding up a stack of papers. He says Ralph solved the Thawne plan. It was because of The Flash Legacy. He tells them that the reason Ralph didn’t want them to destroy the dagger is because the dagger is the only thing keeping Thawne in prison.
Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) is prepped for his execution. The guard tells him he guesses this is it, but all Thawne says is that it looks like it doesn’t it. The guard turns back around and tells him that he forgot something. He pulls out the Reverse Flash ring from the museum and notes he thought it would be a nice parting gift. He places the ring around his neck while Thawne sinisterly looks back at him.
They’re all pondering over the Thawne plan. Destroying the dagger now saves Thawne in the future. The dagger is what is keeping Thawne from having his powers. Nora says that everything Barry told her about Thawne has been true and that everything is her fault. Iris tries to tell her that it isn’t her fault, but she disagrees and leaves. Sherloque says they need to decide whether they’re going to destroy Cicada 2.0 or destroy Thawne. But Barry says they are not going to let Cicada 2.0 kill more people, so they’re going to destroy the dagger. Caitlin tells Cisco he needs to go see Kamilla and that they can handle things until he gets back.
Cisco places a coffee on the table as he stands over Kamilla’s shoulders as she looks through pictures for Iris’ newspaper. He kisses her on the cheek before he sits down. She starts talking about her work with Iris and how she hopes she’ll get to do some metahuman projects soon. She mentions wondering what it was like to be around when the Cicada guy attacked and Cisco corrects her by saying it was a woman. She looks at him strangely and he starts to tell her the story of Cicada and Grace. He tells her that she killed the first Cicada after he took the cure that he made. She scoffs and then realizes that’s what he’s been working on. He tells her he’s been working on it at S.T.A.R. Labs. He tells her there is a lot he hasn’t told her. He then opens a breach with his hand and drops a coffee cup through it. He opens another and it falls back into his hand. Kamilla realizes he’s Vibe. He slightly shakes his head in affirmation. He says he tried to separate her from his two lives and apologizes for lying. He tries to leave, but Kamilla tells him to wait. She says she’s read a lot of comic books and she knows all the tropes about revealing secret identities, but in real life she would never expect him to tell her something like this right away. She says she would never get in the way of him being Vibe if that is the life that he wants.
Barry comes into the speed lab telling Nora that she’s a lot like him – trusting and blame of a bad situation. Nora asks him how does she fix this, but Barry says he doesn’t think she can. She made a mistake and sometimes all they can do is live with the consequences. She has to ask herself what kind of hero will she be – one who takes the do-over after every mistake or one who lives with it and moves forward. Cisco and Sherloque walk in as Caitlin is still working on fixing Ralph. Cisco mentions him never being that way since he first got his powers and Sherloque has an epiphany. He thinks Cisco should blast him and it will bring him back to normal. Cisco does it and Ralph pops back into normal form. He tries to talk but his words are all mixed up, but he’ll be fine. They hear the alarm system start to go off and they all run out of the room leaving a confusing Ralph. The wood particle scan is back and they locate where the woods is that they need to get to. Nora says she has a plan that can stop Cicada and Thawne.
Cecile is leading The Flash, XS, Killer Frost and Joe through the woods as a detection for when they get close to Cicada 2.0. Once they trap her they’ll give young Grace the choice to take the cure. They hope that when she’s no longer a meta she will cease to exist and then they’ll be able to stop her without destroying the dagger and that Thawne will never go free. Barry tells Nora she’ll know what to say when it’s time to convince Grace and all she has to do is speak from the heart. Cecile says something really mean and they realize they’re getting close.
Grace says the dagger is ready and they can leave. The team walk up on the cabin and Cicada 2.0 hops out behind them. She says she’s glad they came so that she can end their lives twice today, but Joe throws the breach device at her and she goes through it into the Thawne trap. They have her and now it’s Nora’s turn to convince young Grace (Islie Hirvonen) to take the cure. She puts on the device and taps into young Grace’s subconscious. She tells Nora she shouldn’t have come back, but Nora says she had to because a lot of people are going to get hurt. Nora states that she’s a meta and that her uncle is too, which is why he took the cure. Meanwhile, future Grace is beating the forcefield in the trap, decreasing its hold. Nora tells Grace that the power is destroying her and she’s going to be left alone, but Grace doesn’t believe her uncle would ever leave her. While they’re talking the evil Orlin is telling Grace not to believe her. Nora tells her to give up her powers like her uncle, but evil Orlin says no and tries to stab Nora. However, the nice Orlin that Grace created stops him. He tells her to listen to Nora. The forcefield drops and future Grace drops the dagger, blasting everyone in the room out of the way. Young Grace agrees to take the cure and they administer it to her. Cicada 2.0 comes in before the cure can fully take and starts moving everyone out of the way. It doesn’t work and Sherloque says if they want to cure Grace they have to destroy the dagger. With everyone pinned down and powers disabled, Cicada 2.0 drags Nora to her. She tells The Flash that he took her family away from her, so now he’s going to watch her take his. Barry starts to scream, but Cisco sends the mirror gun through a breach and Barry shoots the dagger before Cicada 2.0 can get stab Nora. First, the dagger disappears and then Cicada 2.0 starts to. She evaporates before their eyes.
As that happens, the guard is about to execute Reverse Flash, but the dagger starts to disappear. Before the lightning can hit him, Thawne speeds out of the way saying, “Just in time.” All the guards have him at gunpoint, but Reverse Flash tells them that they are all dead and then quickly flashes around the room killing them all. He saves the one who has been his guard the whole time and after a small plea from him, he lights up his hand with electricity and shocks him. He then slices his hand through the guard’s heart and pulls out his ring for his suit. The suit pops out, but before he can get into it time starts to reverse. It goes back to right before he killed all the guards. As he’s saying “just in time” The Flash and XS zoom in and extract all of the guards and stand behind Thawne. He realizes they’re there and says it appears someone has figured out how to reverse time. They start telling him everything they know and he explains what he’s been doing. He says it’s true, but they’re leaving out the most important part – how they helped him escape. They’re confused and he tells them when they traveled to the time vault to try and figure out how to drain dark energy from “the one that got away” that he realized what he had to do after Nora blurted out Cicada’s name. He had to get Nora to trust him just like he got Barry to at one point. Everything started falling into place and he is the only speedster who knows how to manipulate the timeline to get the results he wants. He says that some of them are being orchestrated right now so that he can go free. Nora says that they don’t need a dagger to stop him, so he challenges them and runs off. They immediately chase after him and as they’re running Thawne creates a clone and splits in two opposite directions. He runs up a building and causes them to fall to the ground while he merges back together and stands in front of them. He tells Barry, “I guess you’re not as good a teacher as I am.” He tells Nora she can’t save Barry. No matter what she does, it’s just legacy. As he’s about to run towards them a portal opens behind Nora and Barry releasing the timesphere that hits Thawne and knocks him backwards. He turns to see the rest of Team Flash.
Reverse Flash starts to run at the team, but Vibe opens a breach that the Reverse Flash runs through and comes out behind them only to be blasted by Killer Frost. It slows him so that Iris can shoot him with a gun and send him back into it. Vibe opens a breach in the air so that when the Reverse comes out Elongated Man can punch him so that he goes flying into the air. They use this as a chance to The Flash and XS run through a breach and give him a double fisted punch. XS grabs him up and rips off his cowl. She tells him that it’s not her father’s legacy that’s going to disappear and rears her hand back to vibrate her hand so that she can put it through his heart. Her eyes turn red, but before she can finish it Iris and Barry yell out to her.
Thawne taunts her by saying she was so close. XS’s hands start to crack and glow blue between them. She looks worriedly to Barry and Iris. Thawne tells them that the new timeline Barry created when he destroyed the dagger was starting to set in. Thawne says that trading her in meant he had to be sure that he could go free. Barry races towards him and holds him up. He says that Barry can still save Nora. They have to run her into the negative speed force. It’s the only place immune to timeline changes. He says he’s grown fond of Nora and she showed him what it was like to have a daughter. Thawne says, “See you in our next crisis,” and runs off.
Barry and Nora run to try and get her into the negative speed force, but as they’re running Nora says that she can’t do it. Barry tries to persuade her that she can, but she denies it and runs back to where Team Flash is still waiting. Barry asks her what she’s doing and she tells him that she can’t. Iris interjects yelling to Barry that he needs to take her back. The three start to argue with tears in their eyes and cracks in their voices. Nora overpowers them and yells, “NO” with her eyes flashing red. She says that if she goes back that the negative speed force will be a part of her forever. Iris screams that they’ll get it out of her, but Nora says that she can’t. She says that it’s turning her into Thawne and she can’t change what is happening because it was her mistake. She tells her mother and father, “Sometimes you just have to live with the consequences.” Her body starts to become encased in cracks. Barry, Iris and Nora embrace as Nora begins to evaporate into the air. She tells them, “Thank you for everything,” before she finally drifts away. Her blue particles sparkle in the air as Iris and Barry cry in each other’s arms.
The team express their condolences as Barry and Iris walk back into the cortex. Joe gives them both a hug and a kiss. He tells them they just have to believe they’ll see her again. Barry says that Nora made sure they didn’t lose everything tonight. Sherloque says that it’s been quite a journey and an honor. He gets out his device and opens the breach. He tells the team good luck and leaves. Joe and Cecile get a text from Singh saying that he needs them and to bring Barry. Iris tells him to go ahead because she wants to be alone anyway. Iris turns to the desk and picks up Nora’s journal with tears falling from her eyes.
Cisco is sitting in the med bay when Caitlin comes in to ask him if he’s okay. He tells her that he doesn’t want to be like Thawne and have the most extraordinary thing about his life to be that he has powers. She says no one thinks that, but he says he does. He gets up and grabs the cure saying that all these years he thought Vibe was who he was supposed to be. He tells Caitlin it means he wants to take the cure. She hesitates and he tells her he knows. She says she’s really going to miss Vibe. She injects him with the cure. He says he feels scared but hopeful as a tear falls from his eyes. He tells her he left her a thank you gift in the workshop for being a great friend and leaves the room with a smile forming on his face.
Singh tells Joe, Cecile, and Barry that Grace is getting put into the system and they’ll soon get her into a foster family. He thanks Joe for being at the forefront of Cicada and tells him that he knows he can leave it in his hands. Barry asks what he means and he tells them that the mayor has offered him the job as the new Chief of Police. They congratulate him and he tells Joe that he wants him to be his replacement as captain. He then says don’t worry because he will have plenty of help and then looks to Barry saying, “Isn’t that right Flash?” Barry looks shocked and Singh just says, “Come on, I’m a detective,” and then leaves.
Iris is sitting in the time vault when Barry comes in to sit beside her. Iris says now she knows what her dad meant when he says being a parent is like wearing your heart on the outside of your body. Barry mentions how Thawne got away again and that Nora is gone, but he feels pride on top of his loss. Iris tearily says that she was the best of both of them. Barry says that she was the legacy of them. He wants to be remembered as a good man, a loving husband and a supportive father. Iris tells him he’s already all of those things and Nora felt the same. Iris hands Barry Nora’s journal. She says not matter what changes the time language will never change. As they’re looking through the pictures Barry pulls something out of the back. He puts it into the machine and a video of Nora to Barry and Iris comes onto the screen. They look up in surprise and sadness. She tells them she always wanted to be a hero. She says he came to help fix The Flash’s legacy and defeat Cicada. She’s glad it turned out this way and she wouldn’t change anything about her time with her parents. As she talks about wishing she could celebrate every new chapter and success we see Cisco walking down the sidewalk with Kamilla, Joe and Cecile smiling over Joe’s new office. Sherloque in Jitters turning to see a door opening on its on and Caitlin unwrapping Cisco’s present that seems to be some sort of new suit. Ralph picks up a stuffed giraffe from his desk. She thanks them for everything, for making her a hero and loving her even if she wasn’t perfect. She says she’ll always love them no matter what the future brings. Barry and Iris stand with their arms wrapped around each other crying as the video ends.
We pan over to Gideon as she lights up saying “incoming time flux.” The article from the future appears on the screen and the the date begins to change. The year stops on 2019.
