Interviews
The Lonely Ones – The Lonely One
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) That’s a really tough question to answer because I don’t think there’s any way to answer without sounding like a douchebag. That being said, I feel like we’re all really influenced by Pink Floyd, Queen, Mastodon, Tool and Guns N Roses.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Oops. I guess I kind of answered that in the last question.
Q) How did you come to incorporate members of Bobaflex into the band?
A) There wasn’t really any other answer that made sense. After Shaun quit it didn’t feel right to continue under the name Bobaflex. So, we decided to start something fresh with the remaining four members of Bobaflex.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “The Lonely One.”
A) Oh man. If I remember right, we actually wrote that song before we named the band. It was the first song we wrote after we decided to disband Bobaflex. It’s partly about the sense of loneliness you get out on tour. There’s a lot of partying and personal connections made, but at the end the night you’re still moving down the road to a different city.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) It just comes from a place of honesty. Whether people know it or not there’s an inherent reaction to a song that come from a real place of real emotions. The listener can tell the difference when a song is just written for radio.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) It doesn’t really. We just thought the visuals of big bright lights on a stage looked cool.
Q) What made you select “Eternal Sadness” as the first single?
A) I think it’s a pretty good balance of are very vintage rock and roll inspirations spun in a modern way. That’s a good metaphor for our entire sound on this album.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) There’s no one particular process that we stick to. Sometimes I’ll write a song from scratch and give it to Marty [McCoy] to write lyrics to. Sometimes we’ll all stand in a room and beat our heads off the wall until a song comes together. Sometimes Marty or Jake [Earley] start with a lyrical hook and we build a song underneath that.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) We all co-produce, along with our engineer Joe Viers of Sonic Lounge studios. It seems like on this album the production fell a little bit more on Marty and I but overall it’s largely a group effort.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes. But with COVID in full effect, setting a deadline right now would be foolish. We have no idea when a full body of work will come out. Hopefully sooner rather than later
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) We haven’t played a show yet as The Lonely Ones. I’m very excited to get up to the upper Midwest where rock is still a very huge genre. I’m also excited to go down South and out West just because I love touring that area. It’s beautiful.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Slash and Axl Rose. Brent Hinds from Mastodon. Adam Jones. If he was still alive, Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy would be a dream come true.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to both Dorothy and Reignolf on repeat I’ve been a fan of Reignwolf for probably six or seven years at this point and I’m just getting into Dorothy’s newest record now.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Yes. I hate Facebook and would love to delete my personal Facebook if I could. That’s not an option because it’s such an indispensable way to get in touch with fans and promote your band.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I swear we’re actually gonna play shows some day. Let’s just get this pandemic over with.
