Timeless – Party At Castle Varlar
By: Jessica Wolff
In 1944, several Nazi officers gather at Castle Varlar to show off the successful launch of a rocket. In the present, Jiya (Claudia Doumit) informs Connor Mason (Paterson Joseph) and Agent Denise Christopher (Sakina Jaffrey) that she has found the location of Garcia Flynn (Goran Visnjic) and the stolen time machine. While Anthony Bruhl (Matt Frewer) works with the atomic bomb core that Flynn and his men stole from the 1960s, agents surround the warehouse. Flynn and his men grab everything they can and escape through the time machine.
Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett) informs Christopher and Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter) that Flynn has escaped to Nazi Germany; causing them to be concerned that Flynn plans to give the bomb to the Nazis. Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer) believes that there is a meeting place nearby for Allied soldiers, though the accounts are very unreliable. Rufus asks if any of them speak German and Wyatt admits that he speaks four languages due to his time in the military. Lucy asks about their costumes for the mission and Mason shows her a room with costume pieces from every era of history.
As Lucy gets dressed, she is anxious about the mission. The three time travelers strap into the machine and Lucy tells them that her research has revealed that the allies will help if one orders a specific drink at the bar. When the machine arrives in 1944, a soldier is standing in the field and Wyatt shoots him before he can do anything. They spot another soldier in the distance and Wyatt shoots him as well. Lucy urges him not to change history as much as possible and Wyatt questions why it is bad to kill Nazis. They hear a rumbling of vehicles and hide behind a tree as several military vehicles drive down the road.
As Lucy and Wyatt plan to enter the bar, Wyatt asks Rufus to steal a car for them. Rufus is hesitant of putting himself in danger, but Wyatt insists that they’ll need a way to escape. Lucy and Wyatt enter the bar and everyone stares as them. Wyatt walks up to the bar and orders the drink that Lucy told him to get. The bartender says that he doesn’t have that drink and Wyatt orders them whiskeys instead. Rufus starts to hotwire the car while a German officer (Sean Maguire) approaches Lucy and Wyatt in the bar and orders them leave with him. Wyatt and the man point guns at each other and the man reveals that he is an undercover British spy. Rufus points a gun at the man who then reveals that he is Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.
Once out of the bar, Wyatt expresses his excitement of getting to meet the creator of James Bond and Lucy tells him that historically Fleming was a real spy as well. Fleming joins them and the time travelers inform him about their concerns with Flynn handing an atomic bomb to the Nazis. He shows them his Intel that a launching pad has been built near Castle Varlar and that a rocket will be launched that will hurt many civilians. Wyatt tells him that he and Rufus can disable the bomb if he can help them get into the castle. They share a drink and Fleming flirts with Lucy, which makes Wyatt jealous.
Rufus asks Fleming how he deals with being a spy and keeping secrets and he tells him that not trusting anybody helps him. They arrive at Castle Varlar and Fleming orders the guards to leave. They go to the launch pad and Rufus doesn’t find any trace of the atomic bomb in the rocket. Their work is interrupted as a couple of cars pull up and Flynn gets out with several German officers. Wyatt aims at Flynn, but Wernher Von Braun steps in front of him and Lucy tells Wyatt not to shoot him.
Fleming tells the group that he and Lucy will go to the demonstration inside Castle Varlar while Wyatt and Rufus will remain outside as backup. Wyatt insists that he go with them, but Fleming tells him that it will be difficult enough to get Lucy inside the castle. Wyatt is furious that he wasn’t allowed take the shot and Lucy explains that Von Braun is eventually pardoned by the US government and becomes a key factor in the space race. Wyatt doesn’t care about his future impact, as he believes that Von Braun should never be pardoned because he is a Nazi.
Lucy’s hand shakes as she prepares for the mission and Wyatt checks in on her. Wyatt recognizes her anxiety from some of the soldiers that he has gone into battle with. Lucy tells him about a car crash she was in when she was younger and that being in risky situations is worsening her anxiety. Wyatt tells his story of how his grandfather, a World War II veteran, was his role model growing up and how the idea of saving Nazis makes him uncomfortable. He tells Lucy that she should figure out what she is fighting for to help her get through the missions.
Later that evening, Lucy and Fleming enter the party while Wyatt takes out the men operating the rocket outside. Wyatt sees Fleming hit on Lucy as he spies on the party with binoculars. As Fleming tells Lucy about how he lost his brother in the blitz, Lucy spots a Catholic symbol on the stained glass window in the castle. They spot Von Braun and Fleming asks her to lure him away from the party.
As she walks towards him, Flynn grabs her by the arm. She asks him what his plan is and he tells her that he wants to hand Von Braun to the Soviets so that Russia wins the space race instead. He tells her that his purpose is to destroy Rittenhouse for the greater good, but Lucy thinks he is crazy. Fleming points a gun at Flynn, but he has exposed the fact that Fleming is a British spy to the Nazis and told them that Fleming and his accomplices are trying to kidnap Von Braun. When Fleming refuses to remove his gun, the officer points his gun at Lucy’s head. Wyatt watches from his binoculars as Lucy and Fleming are taken into custody.
Flynn asks to speak with Von Braun and points a gun at him when he refuses. Several officers look for Wyatt and Rufus, but find that they have set off the rocket to explode. The party is thrown into chaos as the explosion is heard outside. Fleming uses the distraction to shoot the guards holding him and Lucy captive with a small pistol hidden in his sleeve. A couple of guards run into the room, but Wyatt shoots both of them. Lucy insists that they have to save Von Braun before they leave.
They grab him as he is exiting and pulls them into the room, barricading the door behind them. Rufus panics because there is no way out of the room. Fleming tries to kill Von Braun, but Lucy insists that they can’t kill him. Lucy begs Wyatt to listen to her and he does despite wanting to kill Von Braun as well. Flynn and the Nazis start to break down the door and Lucy recognizes the Catholic symbol above the fireplace. As Flynn breaks down the door, the group is nowhere to be found.
Lucy leads them out of a secret passageway into the woods and explains that the passageways were used to smuggle priests in and out of the castle when Catholicism was outlawed. As they wait for the Allies to retrieve Von Braun, Rufus goes to talk to him. He writes down an equation for Rufus and asks him if he’s ever thought about the people that he’s murdered as a result of his rockets. Rufus tells him that all he can think about is the destruction his invention has caused. The allies pick Von Braun up and Fleming says goodbye to the time travelers. He asks Lucy if they could meet up again sometime, but she turns him down.
Back in the present, they find out that their adventure has been made into a Bond movie starring Sean Connery. They tell Christopher that there was no sign of the atomic bomb. Mason and Rufus realize that the bomb has been turned into a battery for the time machine that will last about 300 years. Mason asks Rufus for the recording and he tells Mason that he doesn’t want to spy on Lucy and Wyatt anymore because he trusts them. Lucy tells Christopher that she has terms and conditions for her if she wants her to keep going on missions. She demands that they find a way to get her sister back, as that is who she is fighting for. As Rufus drives, his car breaks down. A man approaches him as he steps out of the car and threatens his family if he doesn’t keep spying on Lucy and Wyatt.
