Interviews
Titus Makin’ Jr. – Star-Crossed
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I’m just waiting on “Star-Crossed.” It’s been hard to schedule filming anything else. We’re just waiting on the show and it’s exciting!
Q) The show was quite buzzed about during Comic Con. Do you think that will help or hinder viewership?
A) I think it’s great! The more publicity the better! It’s one of those things where no matter what you say or hear about the show it will really tell it’s own story and it’s never going to be what people expect. I can tell you everything you want to hear, but until you see how cool it is visually it won’t send it home. The more people anticipating, the better! From what I have seen, it should deliver very well.
Q) Please tell us the premise for “Star-Crossed” and about your character Lucas.
A) It is a Sci-Fi romance and it takes place in 2024. What has happened is that aliens have crash landed and they have been quarantined to an internment camp in our city. This is the first year that they are going integrate some of the alien teens with the human teens to see if we can coexist. We are kind of the lab rats or guinea pigs to see if this is actually going to work. A lot of the drama comes in when you are socially accepting a new kind so it kind of ties into modern day issues with equality. A lot of the drama comes in when people are for the aliens and some people want them to go back home. There is a lot of drama with that. I play Lucas, who is the best friend of Emery (Aimee Teegarden). I pretty much cushion the fall and am the comedic relief of the situations. I’m also the educated guy. Any time there is something people want to hack, get into or want answers to most of the time they come to Lucas and he tends to have the answers.
Q) Did you do any training or research for your role?
A) Yes, especially with the tech side of the role. I learned a lot of really big words and futuristic words that Titus would never comprehend. Because Lucas does, I had to. It was difficult learning all of the terminology, but I relate to the character on other bases.
Q) What are those bases you relate to him on?
A) I enjoy being the comedy of situations and the lightheartedness. He’s very accepting of new things and he likes to try new things to see how things turn out. That’s very much how I am. I like to be there for people and I have a big heart. Lucas definitely has a big heart.
Q) Was there anything you added to the role that wasn’t originally scripted for you?
A) I will say that I learned during the casting process that the role wasn’t initially written for a black guy. I added that quality! I added my own flavor! Other than that, I just added my own quirks and energy.
Q) Since you play Emery’s best friend, did you and Aimee need to take some time to bond or was the chemistry instant?
A) It was right off the bat, actually. She is so sweet and has been doing this a long time so she is really good at introducing herself and being really forward in the most positive sense. Here I am, coming into my first series regular position and am kind of intimidated. I don’t know how this works and I hope everyone gets along. Normally, I jump into roles as guest starring or reoccurring. I don’t get to be there with the family from the beginning. She has definitely been very warming and this cast is amazing. It’s been one of my favorite sets to work on and the cast genuinely gets along. There is no drama. People really enjoy one another. We do our work, hang out and grab dinner. Then, we go to work the next day. It’s just been really awesome working with them.
Q) Who are some of the guest stars we’ll be seeing on “Star-Crossed” this season?
A) They have been bringing in some amazing guest stars! Some of theater people like Broadway shows and Johnathan Schaech is great!
Q) How do you plan to celebrate the premiere of the show?
A) We are having a cast party and since I am obsessed with tweeting, I will definitely be tweeting. I’ll be tweeting and at our little cast premiere party.
Q) You were on “Glee” as one of the Warblers and have been traveling around to the different conventions. What has it been like for you getting to interact with so many “Glee” fans?
A) It’s great! It’s by far one of the most humbling things. You get to go out and meet all the people who genuinely care about your career. Not even just your “Glee” role, but the work you put out. It’s awesome meeting those people and they know so much about you. At first, it’s a bit overwhelming, but after a while you really appreciate the fact that they care enough to know that. It’s really humbling and entertaining. You get to meet some characters!
Q) Will we be hearing anything more musically from you?
A) This whole year, now that I have had some time waiting for the show to come out, I’ve been able to get back into music, which is awesome! I’ve been writing with some producers and I had an acoustic set at the House of Blues. It was the release of some of my new music and some covers to welcome people back into Titus’ music. I had to step away for a while and now I’m back. I’m excited about it!
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of you and “Star-Crossed?”
A) Tune in for a good time! Jump on board with such an ensemble cast and it relates to “Glee” in that sense. “Glee” had a lot of success because of the ensemble cast. There was a character that everyone could identify with and this cast has it. There is a character for everybody to latch on to. I just hope people jump in and get invested!
