Top 3 TV Moments – 1/14 – 1/18
By: Malasha Parker
All of your favorite shows have mostly returned from Winter hiatus so I’ll be starting the new year by picking the best drama, comedy, and sci-fi/fantasy moments each week. They may sometimes be equipped with some of your favorite ships or tear-jerking moments, so keep reading if you are still not over what happened on your favorite TV show this week!
Drama: This Is Us, “The Last Seven Weeks” – Zoe lets go of her fears.
This episode showed us so much for our Big Three, but the best of it all was seeing Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) relationship weather a small storm with girlfriend Zoe (Melanie Liburd). Throughout the episode we saw Zoe struggling to be vulnerable about her past and Kevin pushing to move their relationship forward. In the scene outside of Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) election party, we were finally given the reason why Zoe has been so hesitant to unpack her boxes. Zoe reveals that it’s hard for her to let go of her safe space, but wanting to live with Kevin despite it was a huge step forward. Liburd’s performance really locked the meaning of the moment in for this relationship. Kevin has made it clear that he wants to be with Zoe for the rest of his life and she looks to be easing her worries into moving in that direction, too. This was the one highlight of a very stressful episode and the writers nailed it by giving Zoe another chance to open up to Kevin. This scene was perfect for both Zoe and Kevin’s character development. The couple is flourishing beautifully.
Comedy: black-ish, “Black Like Us” – Diane speaks up about the colorism in her family.
When the discussion on “colorism” (discrimination based on skin color) finally got too much to bear, Diane (Marsai Martin) brought up the real reason behind them mentioning the issue in the first place. One amazing thing this show does is manage to always make the characters feelings so relatable. Diane finally standing up for herself and asking her family why no one ever brings up her skin being darker than everyone else’s was such a great and raw moment. Discussing colorism inside of a black household is still somewhat taboo and being able to show that was a smart move on the writers’ and actors’ parts. Marsai Martin nailed it and the writers did well by having Diane ask questions that many young black girls often wonder about if they’ve never had a chance to discuss the issue with the people closest to them.
Sci-fi/Fantasy: The Flash, “The Flash & The Furious” – We get our first mention of the Young Rogues!
In an episode that was hard to bear, a few interesting things did come up. One of those stand out moments was Raya (Gabrielle Walsh) mentioning to Joslyn (Reina Hardesty) that she’s recruiting a team of young rogues! It was a small moment, but significant enough. We will definitely get to see these ladies again! Some of the storylines that were done best in the early days of The Flash were the Rogues, so bringing them back can be fun. I hope when the Young Rogues are officially assembled that the writers have something great and interesting for them. Raya and Joss are great characters with a lot of potential and it would be so fun to see what Joss and Nora’s (Jessica Parker Kennedy) relationship could be like in the future.
