Top 3 TV Moments – 1/21 – 1/25
By: Malasha Parker
All of your favorite shows have mostly returned from Winter hiatus so I’ll be starting the new year by picking the best drama, comedy, and sci-fi/fantasy moments each week. They may sometimes be equipped with some of your favorite ships or tear-jerking moments, so keep reading if you are still not over what happened on your favorite TV show this week!
Drama: All American, “m.A.A.d. City” – Spencer makes a speech that eventually hits its mark.
The standoff between Tyrone (Demetrius Shipp Jr.) and Lahmard (Lahmard J. Tate) gave Spencer (Daniel Ezra) a chance to deliver a powerful speech. Though it seemed to not have immediately resolved anything, it eventually helped Lahmard see reason and hop on board to get the gangs out off the streets. I love how passionate Spencer still is about making his community better, even though he isn’t there most days out of the week. This moment showed how ruthless Tyrone could be. He wasn’t in the slightest bit afraid to do as much damage as possible in the faces of the entire block. Spencer told everyone that the killing wasn’t normal and that it didn’t need to keep happening. Just because it was the way things had always been, didn’t mean that it needed to continue. The writing in this episode was some of my favorite this season and gave us a view of all sides of the gang violence situation. This may have been my favorite episode this season and this specific scene was a huge part of the reason.
Comedy: The Good Place – “Pandemonium”– Eleanor and Chidi prepare to erase Chidi’s memories.
A great aspect of The Good Place, one of the best forking comedies on television today, is its ability to make us laugh and cry at the saddest moments. The writers manage to make Chidi (William Jackson Harper) and Eleanor (Kristen Bell) falling in love and then being forced to break up hit us hard in the feels. Chidi and Eleanor’s last moments together watching videos of themselves was a perfect send off for the season. This will definitely be going on my list of favorite “Cheleanor” scenes. Who else cried at how adorable they were being in the rain? Of course, we know they’ll get back together as they are destined. It’s going to be fun to see how they reunite with each other in the next season, that’s for sure!
Sci-fi/Fantasy: Black Lightning, “The Book of Rebellion: Chapter Three: Angelitos Negros” – Tobias rips Khalil’s spine out!
To say Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) is not a terrifying character would be a complete lie. This man has killed countless people and felt no remorse about any of it. After a search for Khalil (Jordan Calloway), Tobias finally had him captured and brought in. One thing Black Lightning executes well is not being afraid to kill-off or ferociously injure a significant character. My heart jumped so quickly when Tobias jabbed his hand into Khalil’s back. The camera angles made the ordeal all the more terrifying and Krondon is always so dedicated to his character’s role in a scene. He’s one of the best to watch on the series and he made this crazy and ultimately sad scene interesting to watch. I’m scared to see where this will take Khalil next. Hopefully, he doesn’t get caught in Tobias’ grasp again.
