Top 3 TV Moments – August 4 – August 9
By: Malasha Parker
Each week I’ll be picking the best drama, comedy or reality TV and sci-fi/fantasy moments from the shows of the prior week. They may sometimes be equipped with some of your favorite ships or tear-jerking moments, so keep reading if you are still not over what happened on your favorite TV show this week!
Drama: Queen Sugar, “All The Borders” – Outdated.
Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) confronting and accusing Frances (Annalee Jefferies) of burning down the mill was such a heated moment to watch. I absolutely love how Charley can maneuver in and out of spaces with every ounce of power coming to the surface when she needs it. She’s had her fair share of breakdown moments, but this mini showdown displayed just how powerful she can be. The words spoken between these two women were hard to hear, but the scene was amazing. Story-wise, this seems like a turning moment for the way Charley will handle things with Frances and her family in the future. Throughout the entire moment you could see the many emotions of anger, sadness, defeat and empowerment Charley had flowing through her all at once. Gardner is exceptional as Charley Bordelon and she continues to add many layers to her character.
Comedy/Reality TV: A Black Lady Sketch Show, “Your Boss Knows You Don’t Have Eyebrows” – Basic Ball
My favorite skit so far has been The Basic Ball! Seeing as this was definitely a chance for them to pay homage to Pose and the ballroom culture, they picked the perfect announcer for the cause. Caldwell Tidicue was perfect and had me on the floor laughing. The writing was embarrassingly relatable and had me wondering who I knew that did these basic things – I may be one of them. “Running Errands” and “Just Awkward in the Body” were the funniest categories and the writing for them was too hilarious. I have already watched this skit more times than I can count. I need more basic ball skits with the same announcer, please!
Sci-fi/Fantasy: Wu Assassins, “A Twisted Snake” – The new Wu Assassin is revealed to Uncle Six.
After a long fight, Uncle Six (Byron Mann) realizes who the new Wu Assassin is as he’s being taken out of the building. I really liked the entire sequence leading up to this moment. Even as Uncle Six is causing Kai’s (Iko Uwais) face to transition between his own and the ones that he wears when he fights, you can see that Kai is losing the control to hide his true self. When Uncle Six looks up and realizes that it is Kai he has been fighting this whole time, you can see the change in his plan. He sees that he can take a different approach with this Wu Assassin. I enjoyed this scene and episode. It had a few show boggling moments.
