Interviews
Travis Burns – DREAMCATCHER
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) Please tell us the premise for Dreamcatcher.
A) The film centers around Dylan (myself) who is an upcoming musician known to his fans as DJ Dreamcatcher. When something goes horribly wrong, Dylan and a bunch of friends are trapped in a 48 hour whirlwind of violence and mayhem.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the movie?
A) As soon as I read the script, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It was very different to what I used to shoot. I was drawn to the character on so many levels and the film got me excited to dive into.
Q) How was your character Dylan originally described to you?
A) He was described to be charismatic and troubled. Through exploration, I found many more layers to add to the character that I thought would work really well.
Q) Were you familiar at all with any of your costars before working with them on this film?
A) I was familiar with a couple of my costars before filming. I’d seen Zach [Gordon] in a Diary of A Wimpy Kid and saw Niki [Koss] from “Famous in Love.” Both great actors and I was super excited to be working with them.
Q) Did the cast get to spend much time together to bond before filming?
A) We didn’t get a whole lot of time before filming, but I remember the first few days of being on set we bonded very quickly, and it made shooting much better.
Q) What piece of advice did director Jacob Johnston offer while shooting that you took to heart?
A) Jacob is incredibly talented, and I was super lucky to have been able to work with him on Dreamcatcher. One that stands was a scene towards the end of the film, I had a lot of dialogue. I was a bit nervous on the day. After a few takes I remember he came over to me between takes and said, “We have it. Now, it’s time to let go. Follow your gut and see where it takes you. Play with it.” It gave me the confidence to let go. To not think about the destination and enjoy the journey of the scene.
Q) What were some of your favorite scenes to film for Dreamcatcher?
A) Shooting the party scene where I am DJ’ing on stage, a lot of extras were jumping up and down to the music. It gave me a false sense of reality, that I was really there mixing music to all of these people until I heard the director shout “CUT,” which snapped me back to reality.
Q) How did you shake off a long day of shooting such intense scenes?
A) After shooting I’d always go to the make-up room and get a hot towel and put it on my face. I’d sit there for five mins, decompress and cleanse and wipe everything away.
Q) What do you think it is about this movie that will make it a fast fan favorite thriller?
A) It’s a slasher film. Who doesn’t love slasher films?! I think people are going to love the who-done-it element to the film. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the instant fan feedback you’ll be receiving?
A) Of course. Social media is changing the way everyone works and interacts these days. I’m super excited to hear everyone’s feedback.
Q) The movie comes out in March. How do you plan to celebrate?
A) I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’s felt like a long time coming. I’m planning just a small celebration with a few of my friends, nothing too big.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the work you do?
A) I’m always very grateful for all my fans and supporters. You all have kept me motivated and, without all of you, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I hope you enjoy Dreamcatcher as much as I had making it.
