Trinitee – Mixed-ish
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I devoted a lot of my time to “Mixed-ish” and I just returned from Africa promoting literacy with my new book Bold and Blessed. It was really cool and really impactful. I actually got a chance to speak to sixty-five different nationalities at once and to encourage young girls and boys to love themselves just the way they are.
Q) How was your character Tamika on “Mixed-ish” originally described to you?
A) Originally, she was described to me as the character really trying to introduce Rainbow (Arica Himmel) to her black side and introduce her to black culture. She often tries to help her with things like wrapping her hair so her hair won’t get messed up in gym class. She was described to me as “a pretty sassy girl in the 80’s,” but she’s pretty much the friend anyone needs yet is a little afraid to have.
Q) Did you do much research into life in the 80s for the character?
A) When I went out for the role, no, I didn’t really do much research. But once I booked the role, I definitely looked back on some of the fashion and hairstyles. It wasn’t too crazy though the things that I was going to have to do.
Q) Was there anything you have added to Tamika that wasn’t in her initial breakdown?
A) I guess initially I just brought my own style to the character. I’m pretty sure the way I delivered it was a little bit different than what they had in mind, but every character that I step in I try to make it my own any way that I can.
Q) Do the kids on the show get to spend much time together off set?
A) Yes, we do. I try to make sure that we get together as much as possible off set because we are always working. But everyone lives pretty close together so we try to hang out.
Q) You are a part of social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive to the series?
A) All of my fans are going crazy! They can’t believe I’m playing such a drastically different role from my personality and other roles that I’ve played. But they are loving it! They love the character Tamika and they are loving the show “Mixed-ish.” So, it’s really fun to see the live reactions everyone is sending me while they are watching the show.
Q) You have great comedic timing. Is it something that has come naturally to you or have you had to work at it?
A) I’ve always had pretty good comedic timing. I honestly think it was a gift from God to give me this timing that I have and the ability to hit the punchlines.
Q) What have you taken away from your time working on “Mixed-ish?”
A) What I have taken away from my time so far on “Mixed-ish” are the pretty cool trends of the 80’s and how things are kind of coming back to life. Something else I’ve taken away from “Mixed-ish” is how important family is. That’s the thing that I really try to send to everyone that I meant, that family is really important. Even though you may have to fight in the world or struggle to get your voice heard, you are always supposed to have a safe place to go to when you go home.
Q) What message do you hope viewers take to heart when watching the show?
A) I hope that viewers take away from their time watching “Mixed-ish” is to love themselves the way that they are. “Mixed-ish” covers lots of different things that girls, especially bi-racial girls, struggle with such as how they should wear their hair or where they should sit at lunch. So, what I really want viewers to take away from this is to love themselves the way that they are. They don’t necessarily have to fit in with the popular crowd to be unique.
Q) You’re an author and a musician. Do you have any plans to release more music soon?
A) Yes! I’m definitely work on some secret projects that I cannot tell you guys about right now. But, yes, new music is definitely in the works.
Q) Where can people pick up a copy of your book?
A) They can buy it on Amazon, BarnesandNoble.com and everywhere that books are sold.
