Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – Party Monster: Scratching The Surface
By: Sammi Turano
This episode opens with Jacqueline’s former dog masseuse Doug/DJ Fingablast (Derek Klena) telling his story and how it is connected to DJ Slizzard/Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. (Jon Hamm) The whole episode is told in documentary style.
After he proposes to his girlfriend Hello Hadid (Deirdre Reimold), he goes on the hunt to find his favorite DJ, who worked at a party for him when he was younger. He finds his address and goes on the hunt to find his childhood hero—the only one he wants to DJ his wedding.
Much to his dismay, he discovers that he is in jail for kidnapping four girls and keeping them in a bunker for fifteen years. He runs into Bankston (Mike Britt), who tells him that DJ Slizzard is actually in prison. DJ Fingablast is shocked and upset, so he tries to figure out what happens.
In a series of reenactments, we see his theory (which involves Titus’s fire/wannabe porno commercial from S4, E1) and the Reverend acting weird in Walmart by doing karate and defending his right to buy tampons. We also get footage of the bunker women (Ellie Kemper, Sara Chase, Lauren Adams, Sol Miranda) giving interviews to the news. We see his girlfriend (Aidy Bryant) as well, who was clueless about the whole kidnapping. Kimmy is seen throwing a chair at said girlfriend.
The footage moves on to DJ Fingablast skipping rocks and making a fake Facebook profile of a woman named Karen Sorreno in order catfish the Reverend and get his attention. Once he realizes he can’t use Facebook in prison, he mails the profile to him and sets up a meeting.
At the prison, DJ Fingablast comes clean about his identity and demands answers so that he can get him out of prison and DJ the wedding. The Reverend says they need to reopen the case, which leads to said documentary being made.
DJ Fingablast goes to work researching, thinking that nothing makes sense in the case. We see different footage of the mole women, proving they are unattractive as well as President Donald Trump talking about the case. The Reverend and DJ Fingablast have another meeting, where it is suggested another DJ was involved. However, the DJ in question is dead, leading DJ Fingablast to go to Rockswater. While he is there, he sees his fiancée is engaged to another man!
DJ Fingablast gets a call from The Reverend where he tells him that he is no longer getting married. The Reverend is mad he no longer getting out of jail. After he goes back to New York City, DJ Fingablast ends up going out on a date as his alias Karen. He comes clean, but realizes his date Fran (Bobby Moynihan) can help him get his hero out of prison, so everything is back on. Fran and DJ Fingablast go back to visit The Reverend, who tells them how he ended up the way he is, which leads to footage on him on a dating show. The three talk about how women are ruining everything with their new freedom and rights. They decided to band together and make things right.
We also get updates on the Mole Women:
Cyndee is singing at NFL games.
Donna Maria is a mole sauce mole-naire and “Shark Tank” Espanol judge.
Gretchen is running a church in a women’s prison.
Kimmy is revealed to be the ex-wife of The Reverend.
The Reverend admits Kimmy was good to him and if she could be, maybe the rest of the world could. He hopes that it can get him out of prison so that he could get back with her. The documentary ends with Fingablast thanking everyone involved.
The episode itself ends with Titus (Titus Burgess, who would randomly pops up in the documentary) and Kimmy reacting to the movie. He realizes the truth behind his previous acting job, while Kimmy screams “fooping s**t!”
