How many lives are you willing to live just to be with the one you love? Even if for a moment. If you are a fan of Rebecca Patricia ‘Becky’ Armstrong and Free Sarocha Chankimha, you will surely be going to love this long-anticipated movie and I won’t even have to convince you to buy a ticket. However, if you’re not familiar with them and are considering giving Uranus 2324 a chance then, I totally recommend you to stay for the long ride.

Uranus 2324 is a Thai sci-fi film that tells the story of Linlada “Lin” (Chankimha), an astronaut who is about to embark in a remarkable space mission and Kath (Armstrong), a passionate free diver who is willing to defy the limits of time and space just to meet with her lover over and over again. Lin and Kath meet at a young age and what starts as a simple friendship quickly evolves into a meaningful love story that abruptly comes to an end after a tragic event forces them to go separate ways. However, even though their paths are no longer compatible, their love for each other remains. Now, these star-crossed lovers are taken through different realities to be together, but despite the efforts, nothing truly ends in the way they expect.

The undeniable chemistry and confidence that both actresses have developed over time due to prior collaborations is palpable. Although, ultimately, it is Rebecca Patricia Armstrong who ends up taking the lead, giving us a more realistic interpretation of each reality where her character is in. My favorite moment was when Lin and Kath are stargazing and they see the comet Charlotte (who plays a pivotal part in the movie) pass by. Right then, Lin confesses that she wants to become an astronaut but she believes that she won’t make it. We see Kath encourages to do it and even says that is confident that she will accomplish it making Lin to say that she is the first person to ever believe that.

Director Thanadol Nualsuth and writers Thitipong Chaisati and Nut Nualpong’s approaches are well-intentioned, but poorly executed making it to quickly dissolve by a confusing change of scenarios and realities where the audience can hardly tell from one another, except for those where is evident based on the characters wardrobe. On the other hand, the SFX are mostly appropriate placing the audience attention where it’s supposed to be.

This film is filled with a lot of scenes that resemble other iconic pop culture movies such as The Butterfly Effect, The Notebook and even a tad of Interstellar – something that snatches away its own originality. Another element that plays against this movie is the fact that it takes nearly an hour to set the characters storylines and kick off the actual plot and even then, the intentions of the film are not quite clear. With this said, Uranus 2324 is a film made as a gift for the “FreenBecky” fans that I am confident they will love every bit as they are seeing their favorite actresses on the screen. However, for the rest, it just another sci-fi movie. If you are a fan of these type of genre, there are some better choices out there to explore.
