VOILÀ – Therapy

Q) How would you describe your sound?

Gus: Stadium energy meets Rocky distortion who then meets pop melody.

Luke: It sounds like what the margins of my notebooks looked like in high school. Like being day drunk on hormones and pheromones.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

Gus: Everyone from Frank Sinatra to Fall Out Boy! Paramore and Coldplay. I’m inspired a lot by producers now – Monsterz & Strangerz and the Alex Da Kid records from a few years ago when imagine dragons were blowing up

Luke: I’m inspired by authors and movies when it comes to song concepts. Jennifer Niven, John Green, Nicholas Sparks. Musically, I admire lyric heavy storytelling approaches like Pete Wentz, Sasha Sloan, or anyone in Nashville (especially Sam Hunt – God I love him).

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Therapy.”

Gus: We wrote “Therapy” with two super talented friends of ours, Kunfetti & Nicopop who are both wonderful writers and producers. The song was meant to be a pitch song, but the more we worked on it the more we fell in love with it. I think for me the angst that can be felt in the post melody was something that I just wanted us to be able to chant at live shows and it was at that moment that we had to ask if we could put the song out as a part of our VOILÀ project.

Luke: It’s crazy how a person can go from your everything to nothing in a night. When something that sudden happens, you don’t just lose the girl, you lose your mind too.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

Gus: I think it might be the energy of it. It’s a song that has a lot of get up and go – It can send you on your way when you’re feeling a bit uninspired. The kick up the ass you needed – if you will.

Luke: I think most people have had that sinking feeling when they call someone, and they get to that third and fourth ring and realize they aren’t picking up anymore.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

Luke: The song is pretty angry and chaotic. I think a live performance allows us to display the “climbing up the walls” type feeling you get from struggling with your own thoughts.

Gus: It’s raw. This song is all about the live show energy that music was built for. Living life to the fullest is something that one can achieve by highlighting one’s inhibitions, acknowledging them and then proceeding to throw them out the window or in fact go right for whatever scares you! This video was literally us having a blast. Nothing staged.

Q) How did your time together at the USC in the music program help mold you into the musicians you are today?

Gus: Friendship breeds creativity, so honestly, Luke would just beg me for help with his basic times tables and from then on, he’d teach me every minor pentatonic scale out there! Also, we met some wonderful people there that are on our team as of this very moment! Sara Caulfield, our wonderful manager.

Luke: Being around other motivated people who love music is fostering to writing more music! Met my bandmate and my best buddy all in one swoop! Thankful for it

Q) Luke, what is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

Luke: I write poems and little one-liners all the time and put them in my phone. Then, when we go to the guitar or Gus sends a melody over I start stringing those one liners together with a concept we either come up with from our own lives or from a movie or book I read.

Gus: I try to make these poems live long in the memory!!!

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

Luke: Gus is a genius. He does all of it.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) Gus: Promise that it’s coming. We’re planning on releasing so much music. Just delivered two more songs that are on their way!!

Q) With concerts currently on hold, what do you miss most about being on stage?

Gus: The energetic release of the live show honestly. It’s less a performance and more an experience. When we’re back we will give it all we’ve got.

Luke: Being able to tell jokes in between songs.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

Gus: For me it would be Hayley Williams with an adage to the Paramore sound that has inspired me for so long.

Luke: Sam Hunt.

Q) Luke, are there any upcoming acting roles we’ll be able to see you in soon?

A) Luke: Yes! I’m actually currently filming Tall Girl 2 for Netflix and filming another project right after I can’t announce quite yet. A film I shot a while ago Tiger Within will be coming out this summer.

Q) VOILÀ is a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

Gus: I love the fact that we can experience people’s unfiltered opinions of our music. Also, I’ve seen some of the most incredible stories about how songs have helped people in such unique and awe-inspiring ways. That is priceless when we get to understand how people can relate.

Luke: We write a lot of songs that will probably never come out! It helps us to know which songs people resonate with so we can release the similar ones! At the end of the day our only boss is our fans.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) We love you and thank you for every single moment you’re with us on this journey. You’re everything to us.
