WHAT? A Haitian American’s Guide to Disappointing Your Family
BY: Micheal Drew
WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
A Haitian American’s Guide to Disappointing Your Family follows the story of Danny (Micheal Drew), a first generation Haitian American who dreams of becoming a comic book writer. When it comes to the often sought after American dream, living with your mother and struggling with your career is not what Danny’s family had in mind. The fact that he’s already in his thirties just makes it that much worse in their eyes. In this brand new web series you get to watch the journey of a true creative whose passions aren’t taken seriously by those closest to him, an unfortunate reality for artists everywhere.
Right from the jump I was invested in Danny’s story. The start of his morning felt extremely real with being forced to run errands, courtesy of a very subtle guilt trip. But the comic book style insert about Haitian parents comparing their children is what really sold me. The series is incredibly clever, both visually and writing wise. Drew also makes Danny very easy to root for as he’s likable and relatable. In the pilot, when he doesn’t get the yearly bonus he was expecting from work, I was already feeling his pain. Also, when he talks about his love for his comics and a possible career move with his own comic it’s impossible not to be charmed.
Not only is the comedy intelligent, but the story rings true to the culture, too. While Danny’s viewed as a disappointment for his so-called career failures, his cousin Nadege (Cynthia D. Hilaire), who’s stable and has achieved things career wise, is seen as a disappointment herself — up until she announces she’s engaged. An impending marriage and the potential of grandchildren is enough to please the family and leave Danny losing the race for the American dream again.
Anyone who’s dealt with the pressure to succeed or has career aspirations that the people around them simply don’t understand will love this story. It’s smart, it’s hopeful and Danny’s love for his craft is inspiring and infectious. Definitely check this series out.
