WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Who killed Troy McLeavey? In six episodes After Nightfall takes you on a mysterious thrill ride in search of the answer to that question.

When Troy McLeavey’s (Nick Sinclair) body is found deep in the woods his small town is immediately shaken up. Everyone’s a suspect and everyone’s on edge. Accusations swirl around the community almost as quickly as tears and half of the characters spend more time covering their own butts than mourning. The series keeps you guessing. With so many potential killers you’ll be switching your guess from one episode to the next. Each episode was more eerie than the last and genuinely left me with goosebumps.

There’s a handful of characters who are just so sleazy that any of them could be the culprit and I wouldn’t be surprised at all. Kobie (Anton Smilek), the resident bad boy, and Oscar (Jace Pickard), the creepy older guy in town, both come off as extremely suspicious throughout the entirety of the series. Perhaps too obvious, there’s also a good chance they’re red herrings. I’m putting my money on either Troy’s uncle Dave (David Woodland) or his brother Quintin (Tristan Clark) as the killer. They already dabble in illegal activity and come off as guys who are willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead.

After Nightfall made quite the splash in the media festival world after its release; winning awards in directing, editing and then some. The abundance of accolades is well deserved and it’s easy to see why the series was so well received. It’s beautifully shot, the ensemble cast turns in truthful, intriguing performances and the clever use of sound mixing added so much to the experience for me.

They’ve recently been teasing the release of season two, where the killer will be revealed in the premiere episode. I personally can’t wait to see it and hope the quintessential taunting phrase “soon” means I’ll get the answer without having to wait too much longer. Without spoiling anything, there were a handful of other questions raised in the last episode that I can’t wait to see play out. If you’re a fan of murder mysteries or edge-of-your-seat thrillers, you’ll enjoy After Nightfall.
