WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
All or Nothing is the vlog of two college roommates that have been friends for fourteen years. When the series opens, best friends Emily (Samantha Strom) and Annie (Claire Graham) have both just graduated from high school and both have received scholarships to go to Woodcreek University in Iowa. The series follows the girls from gearing up for their first year of college and all through their first year. The two decide to name their vlog All or Nothing based on the motto from the Speech department (where they both got scholarships), which is “give it your all or you’ll get nothing.” As the series progresses and the girls learn more about themselves and the world at large, the title of their vlog takes on a deeper meaning.
When we are first introduced to the two girls, Annie is an out and proud pansexual whose only limitation is her own shyness. Pansexual means that she is not limited in her sexual choice with regards to biological sex, gender or gender identity – meaning that she has the ability to be attracted to all categories of people. Thus, the “all” in All or Nothing. Emily, on the other hand, identifies herself in the first few episodes as straight. Emily, from the start, is incredibly charismatic, energetic, confident, out-going and flirty. As the series progresses and Emily goes on date after date after date she realizes that she is actually asexual. Asexual means a person does not experience sexual attraction to any sex and or gender. For Emily, her lack of any sexual attraction in others would then be the “nothing” in All or Nothing. This series follows the two girls on their journeys of self-discovery, finding their place in this world and figuring out what they want out of life.
As the series progresses, we see how being in a new environment, meeting new people and having their social circle and their world become larger changes or affects the bond between these two best friends. Emily’s journey for self-discovery is very well done and believable. I also applaud the writer’s choice to have Annie be the shy friend and Emily be the flirty friend. It was unexpected and shattered stereotypes. The bond between the two main characters is undeniable and plays to the screen very well. The setting of lifelong friends going away to the same college provides for countless stories and possibilities. Each episode is only a minute or so long and there are currently thirty-eight episodes posted for Season 1. The show is also created and written by the two actresses that play the two main characters. Whether you are preparing for a speech competition or doing anything of substance in life, this series lends an important piece of advice – “give it your all or you’ll get nothing.”
