WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
This series is set in and filmed in Chicago. It focuses on one apartment with six people with all very diverse personalities; however, Hailey (Heather Elaine Abbott) and Bianca (Breanna Benedict) are the two main characters. The series starts with Hailey just off of a middle of the night breakup with her long term girlfriend, taking an Uber-like ride to her new apartment that she found with the aid of Craigslist. When Hailey arrives in the middle of the night she finds out she just moved into a closet rather than an actual bedroom. Bianca feels an immediate connection to Hailey and doesn’t want her to find a different apartment with real bed so she pleads with Hailey to stay. She even offers to share her bed and her literal corner in the apartment. Hailey accepts and a beautiful friendship is born.
While Hailey really cares for Bianca, she is much more independent and more focused on making decisions that are best for her and her future. Such decisions may involve moving out of the apartment and going back to college (which she never completed). Bianca, an only child, is far more dependent on Hailey and doesn’t want to live alone and doesn’t want Hailey to move out or move on from her. After Bianca and Hailey hang out for the first time Hailey lets Bianca know that she is gay, to which Bianca asks my favorite question of the whole series “Never Neville?” This conversation came after Hailey pointed out she was dissatisfied with living in a closet because she is “not f*&%ing Harry Potter.” This is something she then clarifies as not having sex with Harry, but being Harry. Bianca points out she wouldn’t mind having sex with Harry Potter though would prefer Malfoy. Hailey confesses that she has always been more into Luna, which prompts Bianca to ask “Never Neville?” Hailey confirms “never Neville” and thus was born my new favorite way to tell people that I am a lesbian.
The creators do a wonderful job of cinematography. The opening scene of the series has one of the most captivating, beautiful openings I have seen in a web series. The music chosen perfectly highlights the emotions on the screen and the series really hits its stride by episode three. With six very different personalities living in such close quarters there is definitely comic relief, but the series also tackles serious issues such as your place in the world, your role in the world, finding inner peace, finding out who you really are and what you really want and staying loyal to that. If you are looking for a lighthearted comedy with heart and beauty then you should definitely check out Apartment 101.
WHERE CAN I WATCH? The first two seasons have already been released and can be found on YouTube and on their official website.
