Web Series Wednesday – APRICOT

WHAT? APRICOT
BY: Sam Icklow and Jake Thompson
WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
Creators Jake Thompson and Sam Icklow star in this zany queer web series about two best friends trying to navigate through life in Los Angeles. With the deliciously clever tagline “your fruity obsession,” Apricot is ten episodes of a non-stop good time and you’ll want to devour every last bit.
The chemistry between Thompson and Icklow is what makes this series shine. The sketches are clever and humorous, but the way the two play off one another raises them to a whole other level, making them laugh out loud funny. Watching them try and cultivate the perfect WiFi network name shouldn’t have been as enjoyable as it was, but they sold me thirty seconds into that first episode. There’s such simplicity in the skits themselves, elevated by the performances they bring to the table. The episode about eating around company and how differently Jake and Sam treated the situation was a definite highlight.
Apricot is full of pop culture references, some blink and you’ll miss it and others smack you right in the face. Drew Barrymore’s cameo in Scream, an album cover from the cult classic Josie and the Pussycats movie, a singalong to one of the songs from” Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” iconic musical episode – it has just about everything an entertainment enthusiast could ask for. I rewatched just to see everything in the background I might’ve missed the first time around.
Episodes come in at about one minute a piece, making Apricot an easy binge. It’s a hilarious show about celebrating Queer friendship and all the little absurdities about living in the big city. Thompson and Icklow also host a podcast called “The OC Pod,” where they recap and relish every aspect of the hit teen drama, which as a big fan of “The OC,” I plan to thoroughly check out myself. I’ll happily consume any and everything this duo decides to put out together, they’re just that good.
WHERE CAN I WATCH? APRICOT is currently available as a part of Outfest LA’s virtual experience.
