WHAT? Black Enough

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Black Enough is an intimate and poetic web series, straight from the heart, about what it means to survive in the Black community. The series follows Amaya (Tiffany Gordon), a college student trying to find her way at a predominantly white college.

Everything about this series is beautiful. The words are touching, both the conversations between characters as well as the voiceovers will leave you thinking. It’s shot in an incredibly captivating way with Amaya’s occasionally dreamlike way of seeing the world showcased wonderfully. It’s easy to get lost in this show and want to watch all thirteen episodes in one sitting. It’s like a comfort food or a warm blanket and, despite the heavy themes, it’s a series you can find solace in.

As someone who’s mixed race, I can absolutely relate to insecurities born from my experience in the Black community. This series touched base on just about everything I’ve struggled with personally. I know what it’s like to be told you’re not black enough because of how you speak, your interests, your friends or how you do your hair. I lived it. It was comforting to watch a series so genuine and honest, weaving in humor with these very real struggles we as young Black women face. The way the series dared to explore each nuanced aspect of Black communities is unlike something I’ve ever seen. They didn’t just vaguely mention them or solely highlight them through humor. They dove deep and, as Amaya was navigating through, I was too.

Black Enough is a prime example of what can happen when Black artists are allowed to tell their own stories. With Black creators both in front of and behind the screen, the series is anchored in truth. There are little things throughout the series that make every character incredibly real. No one is a stereotype or a one-off side character meant to reach a diversity quota. Things that happen all too often in network productions. This is “Black Girl Magic” and “Black Excellence” in every sense of the words.

Season Two of Black Enough is already in the works, so now is the perfect time to stream the debut season. If you’re a Black artist or someone who simply struggles with feeling like you’re enough in your community, no matter what it is, this series is perfect for you. If you’re someone who appreciates works of art and longs for diverse storytelling, this series is perfect for you, too. It’s a series everyone needs to check out.
