WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
Do you love food, friends and family? Family Style finds a way to easily combine all three and invites the audience into their private dinner parties to join in on the fun. Alongside celebrity guests the Family Style “Foodie Fam” explores Asian food restaurants, diving headfirst into all kinds of cultures across an array of different ethnicities and generations. Each episode offers insight on a new tradition or showcases creative recipes, leaving your mouth watering and tempting you to crack open a cookbook.
There’s a warmth that radiates off the cast, everyone seems completely comfortable throughout every episode. After the first couple of episodes I started to feel like I was personally friends with host Amanda Suk. The conversations with the guests are very natural and it even made me feel comforted. The interactions never come off as stuffy or awkward – it’s always like watching a group of friends catching up and just shooting the breeze, sharing their stories. It’s incredibly refreshing to see Asian representation discussed so candidly by those who are currently leading the charge when it comes to Asian representation in media.
A “Growing Up Asian” segment is also included in the episodes where celebrity guests share some personal stories about their lives. Director Justin Lin’s tale about his parent’s old fish and chips restaurant was especially sweet and thought provoking; hearing he’d gone literal decades without seeing his father in anything other than fluorescent light was wild.
The most recent episode “Fusion” brings actor Ross Butler into the fold, who spoke openly with hosts Stacy Fan and Lana McKissick about what it means to be a mixed-race individual and how the blending of cultures and history impacted their lives growing up. It was amazing to see a conversation of that nature come about so organically. It really shows what is the heart of this series.
New episodes of Family Style are released every Tuesday and Thursday through the end of the month. The series’ first season is also available to stream. The majority of the show’s second season was filmed pre-COVID, but the final two episodes utilize video chat and bring you right into the homes of the cast. And given the unfortunate times we’re in, a series like this one is just what the world needs. Whether you’re a major foodie or just love yourself some comfort foods, become part of the Foodie Fam, grab something great to eat and give Family Style a healthy binge.
